EXPLORATORY STUDIES MAJOR EXPLORATION SERIES ASSIGNMENT Attendance and Reflection (35 points) Due: October 19 (may be turned in sooner if you attend early MES sessions)
The Major Exploration Series gives students an opportunity to see the big picture of the Colleges, departments and majors at NC State. It is the first of many opportunities to participate in the process of networking!
All Exploratory Studies first year students are required to attend two College sessions. Complete a copy of this MES form for each College session you attend. ** Make sure you sign in by swiping your student ID at each session. You must be on the attendance report in order to get credit for attendance. **
For each College session you will identify at least 2 majors that you would like to learn about. Your questions should focus on learning about the academic discipline, specific courses, special programs/opportunities, internships, research opportunities, career information, etc.
NAME: Zia Wilson USC 101 SECTION NUMBER: 21
College: Humanities and Social Sciences Date of Session: September 19, 2016
Two majors I want to explore in this Majors Exploration Series Session are:
___Psychology_______________________ and International Studies__________
Questions you intend to ask at MES Session
What kinds of jobs are the most popular in these career paths?
What kinds of skills would one need in this line of work?
What are the projects that have been done with this major at NC State?
Notes from Session
Students often find employment at their internship agencies. At the social work booth examples of internships included: helping persons with disabilities find work, addiction recovery treatment, working with at risk teens, such as Teen Court, Case management with elders, supporting women who have ever been sex trafficked, disaster relief coordination, helping teen parents, and working with homeless families.
One of the most diverse programs on campus is the BSW student body consisting of about 25% minority students
BSW Student Organizations include the following subgroups: Men in Social Work, Baccalaureate Student Social Work Association, Phi Alpha Honor Society, and Child Welfare Collaborative
More than 4,200 Humanities and Social Sciences students; about 81% undergraduate majors and 19% graduate students
More than 11% of Humanities and Social Sciences undergraduates are in the Park Scholars, University Honors, University Scholars, or Caldwell Fellows programs
For Faculty and Staff, it is the second largest college at NC State with 587 members, including world class faculty representing Ph.D. granting institutions across America
There have been studies on the relationship between emotion regulation and stress, the role of mothers in children’s emotional competence in school, and Dual language education of low income children and its impact on cognitive function. (at NC State)
Once you have attended, write your answers to the following about ONE major (or minor) that you learned about at this session.
Now that I know about ______Psychology_____________________________ (fill in name of major) in the College of ___Humanities and Social Sciences____________________, I have identified the following pros and cons about this major:
Pros—What is appealing about the major? What are the good points? Does it seem to “fit” who you are and with your goals?
Cons—What is not appealing about the major? What are the drawbacks? Where does it not “fit” with who you are? Does it conflict with your goals?
PROS (must have at least 3)
CONS (must have at least 3)
It offers flexibility in career selection and mobility.
The degree program focuses on developing skills in critical analysis, creativity in problem solving, and interpersonal relations. These skills fit my preferences for a career.
3. It teaches you about the human psyche and studies the mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought.
I would most likely have to minor in another field in order to have a broader selection of jobs, if I didn’t want to be a psychiatrist or psychologist.
In order to be a psychiatrist I would have to go to medical school, which may conflict with my goals.
To get a highly paid job one would have to study for seven years or more.
Greatest ‘take-aways’ from this MES Session (Example of questions to get you thinking: What did you learn? What surprised you? What excited you? Meet someone that may help you during your time at NC State?)
I learned a lot about all of the different majors Humanities and Social Sciences include. Before attending this informational session, I did not know that International Studies and Women’s and Gender studies were majors that are offered. The Nonprofit Studies Minor also caught my eye because I am interested in eventually serving in the Peace Corps and it would be an interesting field to further examine. I am also excited that if I pursued psychology as a major I would not have to take chemistry or calculus.areer information, etc.
