"Oh, I'm so late!" I said to myself as I pushed sixty in a residential area. "Why does peaking dynasty have to be so far." It was 6:27 PM. I was twenty seven minutes late for dinner with some of the most important people currently on earth. I couldn't be more stressed. My 88 Monte Carlo sounds ready to fall apart, but I'm not worried about that.
I'm on my way to meet some very interesting people, one of which is Arthur Dent. Arthur was a average earthling until earth was destroyed by aliens. He is now hitchhiking across the galaxy along with Ford Perfect. Remind me to thank him on returning to his destroyed planet for dinner. I hope he doesn’t mind I'm late. Ford Perfect is a Betelgeusian from the planet Betelgeuse 5. He escaped the destruction of earth after being stranded there for fifteen years. He is an experienced hitchhiker just now getting back to his old routines. Zaphod Beeblebrox will also be at dinner tonight. He is the president of the Imperial Galactic Government. Although the president holds no real power in government, he acts as a figurehead. Only six people in the whole universe know where the ultimate power is wielded. Zaphod is a smart, yet stupid, irresponsible crook. I better watch my wallet. Zaphod is accompanied by his girlfriend, Trillian. Trillian used to live on earth until zaphod picked her up from a party. Ever since, she has lived a new life far away from earth.
I finally arrived at 6:35 PM. I hope I haven't kept them waiting, or even worse, I hope they didn’t leave! I walk in and spot them towards the back sitting at a booth. I take a deep breath and walk over. Nerves really get to you when you're meeting the president of the galaxy.
"Ah, so you must be Zack" said Ford Perfect.
"Nice of you to show up" Muttered Zaphod sarcastically.
"Sorry I couldn’t get my car to start" I proclaimed.
"I understand" said Arthur and Trillian simultaneously.
"You should invest in a ship" muttered Zaphod, being sarcastic again. Earth was way behind the rest of the galaxy in, well, everything!
"Pshh, who needs a spaceship. Just hitch a ride wherever your heading." Claimed Ford. Of course he would say this, he's a hitchhiker.
"I think I'll just stick to my Monte Carlo, thanks." I said," I missed dinner didn’t I?"
"Yeah you did" said Arthur, " but you're just in time for the fortune cookies"
"Yay, fortune cookies" said zaphod, of course, sarcastically.
"Oh how I love fortune cookies." Says Arthur, " Ill open mine first." He broke the cookie apart, ate half and then read aloud "Welcome to our new home, you’ve been here all along. Learn to rely on yourself, or else you won't last long."
"Doesn’t sound bright" said Zaphod as he chuckled.
"Why don’t you go next Zaphod?" I asked.
"Ehh I'm okay, I don’t really need to know my so called future. People getting money for putting paper inside of cookies and saying they hold your future. Ugh, Earth!" Said Zaphod. He obviously wasn’t a fan of Chinese food.
"Come on Zaphod, just open your cookie" sayed Trillian.
"Okay" he murmured. He cracked open his cookie and read aloud "You have it all, more than money can buy, you shall learn the truth, and then you will die."
The table grew quiet.
"These fortune cookies sure aren't messing around are they" joked Ford Perfect.
"What if these fortunes actually come true?" Asked Arthur.
The table grew quiet again.
"Nah that’s impossible." Claimed zaphod "I'm not going to base my future on some piece of paper inside a cookie."
"You never know" I stated. "Trillian, your turn."
"Okay" she said nervously. I've never seen a table so tense because of a few cookies. But these fortunes were a little peculiar. Trillian opened her cookie, ate both sides, drank some water and then read aloud "Find a new man, or things will get worse, your first walked upon earth, now you hold the universe."
The table grew quiet again. This silence lasted longer than the last one.
"Okay so were in agreement this is a little weird?" I asked.
"A little?" Asked Trillian "This cookie knew I was born on earth and now travel the galaxy."
"Okay okay maybe a little more than weird. But this doesn’t mean these fortunes are true." I claimed.
"Yeah he's right" said Zaphod, "no way these cookies are true. Ford, open yours." It felt good to have the president of the galaxy agree with you.
"Okay, I guess since everyone opened theirs." He opened his cookie, ate half and read aloud "First name Ford, last name Perfect, Traveling the world, expanding his intellect."
"Pause" said Arthur, "this fortune actually had your name in it?"
The table grew quiet, the longest silence so far. It looked like everyone was thinking.
"I think these fortune cookies might actually hold our fortune" said Trillian.
"Okay lets slow down for a second. Lets compare these fortunes." I said, "As I've been listening, it seems that these fortunes have gotten more specific as each person goes."
"Hey you're right" said Arthur, "It started very brief and now it has Ford's name in it!"
"And we still have one left" Zaphod pointed out. Everyone began to stare at me. I was lost in the moment. Tell me, what would you do if you knew you were about to read a detailed description of your future?
"Okay" I said weakly. My hands were clammy and I could feel myself beginning to sweet. I really didn’t want to know my future, but I knew I had too. I was searching for any loophole to get me out of this mess. And then it hit me. I undid the loose plastic wrap around the cookie and then suddenly, without warning, shoved the whole cookie in my mouth and swollowed. I could taste the paper over the tasteless Californian cookie. Everyone yelled at me. I could feel the anger and stress surrounding me. I had let them down. I just couldn’t do it, I'm just a 17 year old kid, I have my whole life ahead of me.
My four dinner guests left shortly after Zaphod didn’t mind saying goodbye. They all carried their fortunes with them as they left. I was carrying my fortune with me too, sorta. I had so much going through my mind. Who was making these fortunes? How were they so accurate? And why did these important people of the galaxy come to earth for Peaking Dynasty? I guess I'll never know. I hope that these characters future turn out well, no matter what a piece of paper says.my Monte Carlo, thanks." I said," I missed dinner didn’t I?"
"A little?" Asked Trillian "This cookie kn
