My name is Zachary Duke Herald, and I am 17. I have been interested in various things from gaming to outdoors, shown by me being a Boy Scout, and I look to further in Scouts by getting Eagle. I have also had a huge interest in CSI type things ever since I saw CSI on TV. My goals currently are to complete high school and My long-term goals include: Becoming a Crime Scene Investigator and hopefully retire t that job, finish 4 years of college to become the CSI. My goals reflect what my project is as my project revolves around staging and solving a murder scene. I chose this over more obvious answers and choices like learning how to do something as this was more of a challenge to complete.
The research paper topic I had chosen was how the evolution of different forensic methods had changed the way forensic investigations were conducted. I researched how hard it was to solve crimes in years past without the scientific improvements made to the science of forensics. I had learned that until the 2000s-forensic science was not very defined and had many problems still to work out. As time went on, newer and better methods evolved to make forensic specialists jobs easier, more efficient, and more accurate. Most of these methods included making things digital and more electronic based then they were in the past.
The research paper helped me know more effective ways to gather and collect evidence from a crime scene and how to input the evidence. It told me how I can take fingerprints from a scene and how to identify said prints using various proven methods. I had to overcome some issues such as not having the actual tools used by forensic scientists for my product, which having a mass spectrometer would help as would the ability to do DNA evidence. I had to also overcome the obstacles of only having a staged crime scene for as long as the person giving up their time as the dead body can offer. Though it was easy that we just had to take pictures of the body and nothing more.
I have always had an interest in CSI and similar areas since I watched CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on TV and its sister shows. This caused me to pursue the hardships and more involved. It led me to thinking how it has evolved over time like how in the show they updated every time an innovative technology had come about. I had looked at various areas in which there had been major overhauls in technology since forensic science had been started. I desired to do this from having an interest in mystery and discovery which this area is a suitable place for. Though I know real life CSI is nothing like the TV portrayal I have always been invested in it.
All in all, I think my senior project was fun but hard. I think the whole thing should not be a make or break for your senior year. I would love to see it stay but in a less significant role and to be brought in as say a final for a lit class or a homeroom and not for it to have to be what you have to pass to graduate. This has caused many seniors and parents issues, and I want to look out for future seniors so their senior year can be enjoyable and so they do not have thoughts of dropping out. Thank you judges for taking time out of your life to read this and judge me.
