<Yellow Butterfly Project> Statue of Comfort Women Ring that I'm giving out 1. Who are 'Comfort Women'? ‘Comfort Women (Military Sexual Slaves by Japan)’ are women who were forced to serve as sexual slaves of Japanese military in regions like China or Southeastern Asia, during the World War 2. ‘Comfort Women (Military Sexual Slaves by Japan)’ include not only Korean women (assumed number 200,000) but also women lived in Taiwan, China or Southeastern Asia. And some of them were Europeans who lived in Southeastern Asia. They were treated so inhumanely that it would be unspeakable, and even today, their pain wasn’t fully recovered. 2. Why I decided to start the project On December 28, 2015, the Korean and Japanese governments reached an agreement on ‘Comfort Women’. South Korean government put a period to this issue just by receiving 10 billion yen from Japanese government. What’s more, despite opposition from the Korean people, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Korea and Japan reached an agreement without even listening to opinions of victims. However, this issue has never been over yet. Among 239 ‘Comfort Women’ victims who were registered to South Korean government, only 39 people are currently (based on January 6, 2017) being survived. Japanese government must stop making absurd remark about them and apologize them so that pain of the victims can be recovered. Also, both Koreans and world people will have to remember ‘Comfort Women (Military Sexual Slaves by Japan)’ forever. By the way, in December 2016, when I participated in candlelight rally held in Gwanghwamun Square, I saw a person giving out yellow ribbon for free to remember the April 16 Sewol ferry disaster and came up with an idea of making yellow butterfly backpack ring to remember ‘Comfort Women (Military Sexual Slaves by Japan). That’s how I got to start this free present event. 3. What does the butterfly simbolize? Butterfly symbolizes ‘Comfort Women (Military Sexual Slaves by Japan)’, not only who came back to Korea but who still had to stay in foreign countries as well. 4.
