COUNTY OF COBB )
A FALSE STATEMENT CONCERNING THE FACTS CONTAINED IN THIS AFFIDAVIT MAY SUBJECT THE PERSON MAKING THE FALSE STATEMENT TO CRIMINAL PENALTIES AS PROVIDED BY GEORGIA LAW.
Victoria Jones, appearing before the undersigned notary and being duly sworn, says that:
My name is Victoria Jones. I am of majority age, suffering from no mental infirmities and am duly competent and qualified to attest to this affidavit. I have personal knowledge of the facts set forth in this affidavit.
My daughter, McKenzie Jones, was a student athlete at the University of the South and played on the women’s basketball team under Coach Tom Campbell and Coach Amber Gilliam.
My opinions of Coach Campbell, discussed below, are based upon my personal observations of Coach Campbell, as well as my conversations with student athletes (including my daughter and Emily Culbertson) and with the parents of student athletes concerning his conduct and behavior.
I found Coach Campbell’s conduct with respect to the female student athletes to be offensive. He created a hostile environment on the women’s basketball team. Coach Campbell harassed players with verbal abuse that went far beyond “tough love” or “old school coaching.” He was manipulative and clearly lacked the ability to control his actions.
I found Coach Campbell’s conduct to be offensive. I felt that it was my moral obligation to bring this hostile environment and harassment of female athletes to the attention of Athletic Director Mark Webb. I engaged in a series of email correspondence with Mr. Webb in January of 2015.
My family felt that our concerns were serious enough that my husband, Cliff Jones, traveled to Sewanee and met in person with Mr. Webb to specifically discuss the hostile environment and harassment of female athletes by Coach Campbell in early 2015.
There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Webb, and in turn the University, were aware of this situation in early 2015. It was my sincere hope in bringing these matters to the attention of the University that it would take action and implement corrective measures to address our serious concerns.
