In the first scene we find that most of the sentences are a combination of “doing” and “being” schemas. As this text was written with the intention of being performed, Frank, while talking describes the main characters. Frank becomes the source of energy, therefore he is the Agent of the “doing schema.” When in line 4 Frank says “(…) except she is not a ranging psycho bitch (…)” we found here an example of a “being schema”; the essive role is of attribution because he is giving a characteristic of her daughter; all these sentences are in the declarative mood.
In the second page we found more instances of doing schemas, for example in line 25 when Lip says “coming through”, here this sentence expresses the agent´s volition. Another instance of a doing schema is in line 32 when Fiona says “arms up” she is giving a command to her brother; consequently the sentence is the imperative mood.
In the third page we found an instance of the experiencing schema. This schema is realized by verbs of perception, so in page 3 line 60 when Steve says “the first time I saw you dancing”, the verb saw is expressing something that human beings do as an involuntary act, although in this case he stared at Fiona deliberately. The completeness of this action is shown by a verb in the past tense; in this case the verb is saw. “The patient in an experiencing schema is not affected and cannot become the subject of a passive sentence.” In the same page, line 62 we got another example of the doing schema, when Steve says “all the indications being that I’m getting…a second chance to make a good impression”. Here the entity is seen as the source of energy that is developed. (Driven R, Verspoor M, Cognitive Exploration of Language and Linguistics, Second Revised Edition, John Benjamin. P86) thus we cannot paraphrase this sentence saying “you were seen by me.” In this scene we also found an instance of a moving schema, in line 80 when Steve says “you just leave him there all night? Here there is a combination of a doing schema plus a start-end that gives an idea of temporal sense. The speaker’s attitude is in the interrogative mood. In line 83 we found an example of a being schema “which main function is to relate a characteristic or any other conceptual category to a given entity which does not really play a dominant role in the relationship. The role of the main participant is described as a Patient.”(Driven R, Verspoor M, Cognitive Exploration of Language and Linguistics, Second Revised Edition, John Benjamin. P83) consequently in page 3, line 83 when Fiona says “Liam’s my brother” the Patient would be “Liam” and the sentence shows a relation of class membership as Liam is described as a family member.
In the last page, line …. When Lip says “The sausage is ready” we see an example of the happening schema, since it denotes a process that is taking place and the participating entity involved in it. This example is an intransitive pattern. (Driven R, Verspoor M, Cognitive Exploration of Language and Linguistics, Second Revised Edition, John Benjamin. P83)
