Cubits Chapel Settlement of the Trustees :
Whereas a Chapel or Edifice for the worship of the almighty God, together with a dwelling house and school room adjoining, thereto has been erected by Charles Cozens, Esquire on a spot of ground lately belonging to him at Cubits in Conception Bay Newfoundland and now sold to the undersigned Rev. Holden who have agreed and determined that the same doctrines and form of worship as have been hereto for used, shall be continued. That is to say the form of worship generally used by Wesleyan Minsters. The congregation to have the Privilege of using Doctor Watts Hymns or any other approved selection of hymns occasionally. It is further agreed that in case we are unabled to support a resident minister we are to have the privilege of being supplied one from the Wesleyan Connexion, but in case of their refusal or should the other contingences happen so as to induce them to abandon the circuit we then agree to apply for a minster belonging to the Society of Independents or Congregationalists. We also agree that should the present School Master, Whilliam Green shall hereafter leave Cubits, that his successor or successors shall be chosen by the Trustees herein after ____ or a major part of them and the residing Wesleyan Minister residing at Brigus. That is to say until we have a minister here, then by our minister residing in this place and the trustees or a major part of them. in case of there being _____ to the minister appointed the trustees or the major part of them shall have the authority to allow him to occupy the dwelling House adjoining the Chapel, as long as he shall continue our minister, and further that if he should be a person qualified for keeping school and feel disposed so to do, the trustees or a major part of them shall have power to give him up the School room so long as he shall continue to be our minister and keep school.
That two of the pews or seats numbered 27 and 35 each be free for the use of the poor or strangers.
The Trustees or the major part of them shall have power to keep the premises in good repair and the expense thereof to be co ordinated on the pew holders, or otherwise to be raised by the subscription of the said Trustees, or a major part of them may judge best, and further that the Trustees or a major part of them shall be allowed to enlarge the place of worship, provided the congregation shall increase so as to render it necessary, but the expenses as before stated shall not be levied on us the pewholders without our consent.
And it is further agreed that this document shall be recorded in the Registary Books at Harbor Grace and the original to be held by the said Charles Cozens, one of the Trustees during his natural life or while he resides in the district.
The trustees or a major part of them are also to be appointed Church Wardens or Deacons ____every year. We also unanimously agree to appoint the following persons as our trustees.
Charles Cozens, Esquire. Philip Bennett. Jonas Soper. William Hurrell. John Ledrow. John Sheppard-the elder. Henry Sheppard. Abraharam Ledrow. Robert Taylor-the elder. Nathan Hurrell and William Wakeham. as witnessed our hands this the twenty-fifth day of November in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine.
