I am Valerie Cohn. I am a senior at Etowah High School. My goals are to graduate and go to Chattahoochee Tech after high school in the fall. From there, I will transfer to a two-year school to better my education. I also want to travel, so I might do that before I start college. My senior project is animal adoption. The reason why I wanted to do animal adoption is that this career can be rewarding and helps the community, and it’s one of my many interests.
The topic of my research paper was animal adoption and veterinary medicine. I focused on the impacts and the effects. It is especially challenging when you do not exactly understand how some things do not work. Getting started on it earlier made it easier to get finished on time. The impacts and effects this career have on people and animals is just an endlessly rewarding experience for most. It gives the opportunity to find an outlet for connection.
My final product on my journey was hard, but was worth it. Sometimes I would not be able to go to the ranch and check on the horses. In addition, my mother got very sick without notice, which made things more complicated for getting this project done. My facilitator is a very busy woman herself at times, so it was also hard to find ways to communicate over the phone or just in person because all of the volunteers ask what they can do to help her out with the horses.
My research relates to my future career because it involves helping animals, which is never going to stop unless there is no more love in the world. I have learned throughout this process that I am still not sure what I want in life, but I know I have such a huge compassion for animals. Overall, I am happy about the progress I have made so far, and what I learned to understand more about this career. However, this is not always an easy job. Coming face to face with some very unpleasant situations might send most people turning the other way because of how gruesome some things may seem.
I know at the end of the day this is like any other project I have ever done, but once I stand in front of you, it is ending my chapter at Etowah and my high school career. Overall, completing the senior project was a good learning experience. I am grateful for you, volunteering your time to be my judge.
