What were the outcomes/verdicts in both trials/cases?
A: The outcome of the Rodney King incident was complete chaos. Four police officers were acquitted for the brutal beating of Rodney King by a jury of ten whites, one Hispanic, and one Filipino. The verdict upset predominantly the entire black community, which resulted in rioting throughout the city. Rioters began burning business establishments and vandalizing property.
The verdict of the O.J Simpson trial, resulted in Orenthal James, being found not guilty of all charges. The trial is the longest murder trial ever in the state of California. People of different races reacted in various manners. Predominantly the African American community rejoiced as a result of the verdict, however, there were a number of African Americans whom did not agree with the verdict.
B: My reaction to the Rodney King trial was complete disgust. Rodney King was wrong in that he attempted to run, however, the excessive beating was absolutely unnecessary. The officers who participated in the beating were acquitted, but later on were convicted in supreme court. The conviction brought little comfort, however, justice was served.
My reaction to O.J Simpson trial was indecisive. The amount of evidence substantial, however, the gloves did not fit so the jury had to acquit. The fact that the case has never been solved is a mystery. In my opinion, the jury may have been compensated before the trial began.
The actions of those in the video were not justified. The results of the trials did not give any citizen the right to vandalize property or cause bodily harm to other citizens.
C: Describe the police-citizens reactions in the video? What did the police do or not do in response to the reactions of the public.?
A: The reactions of the people in the video may be described as violent, chaotic, and tragic. The reactions of the police may be described as forceful. The police in the video were doing their job as well as trying to maintain peace and order.
D: In your opinion, how have these two cases changed law enforcement, policing in particular? By this I mean, has anything changed from the early 1900’s until now in terms of how police approach or handle certain situations, especially riots and those involving minority populations?
A: In my opinion, these two cases have not changed policing much. There are a number of black individuals being shot daily, and the incidents are broadcasted on television. Officers are practically escaping murder charges. Officers have become much worse in my opinion.
E: What do you think the police could have done differently in both situations.?
A: The police officers in the Rodney King case could have arrested Rodney instead of brutally beating him. The incident lasted fifteen minutes, in which he was chased and beaten. The police could have arrested him for resisting arrest and the beating would have not occurred.
The police officers in the O.J Simpson trial could have gained more evidence and spent more time on the case.
