CONSERVATION & RESTORATION COURSE TERM PROJECT

2016-2017 FALL TERM
AIM: To study Yeldeğirmeni (Kadıköy) in terms of historic preservation concepts and intervention types.
1. Historic background:
Visual and written documentation about the historic, socio-economic, cultural, architectural and urban features of the site
(Defining the present status and identifying changes to the site through the old and new photographs, Goad/Pervititch insurance maps, historic aerials)
It is mandatory to write references.
Analyses for building lots (based on plans):
Legal protection status: The listed (legally protected) buildings should be marked on the plans.
Number of floors: The number of floors will be marked on the plans.
Functions (ground floor and upper floors): The present functions of the buildings will be marked on the plans. The gorund floor will be marked separately from the upper floors.
Authentic building-new building: The buildings that comprise the authentic urban fabric of Yeldeğirmeni with their construction type and façade-plan typology. The new buildings will be analyzed according to their coherence with the authentic urban fabric. Are they in harmony or in contrast? Contrasting new buildings will also be categorized according to their architectural quality.
Status of authenticity: The authentic buildings will be categorized according to the degree of intervention they have undergone. The intervention types will be classified according to the changes on the façades and the mass/volume.
3. Silhouettes: The silhouettes of the site will be drafted in 1/200 scale technique. A proposal silhouette will be prepared including the infills and interventions to contrasting buildings.
4. Presentation and submission: 15 minute Powerpoint Presentation for each group. Final submissions will be a single A1 poster with soft copy in CD. Submission deadline is the final exam day.
