1. The situation or background of the problem:
The solar energy that allows a solar cooker to heat is that applies to usages of concae mirror. Solar energy is a kind of renewable energy that transforms luminous energy into thermal energy. When you set up a solar cooker under the sun correctly, the sunlight will focus a specific point after it reaches the pot and reflects directly. While the sunlight is focused, it is providing the heat to make the temperature increase. The factors that affect the efficiency of the solar cooker are weather, the reflection rate, materials used ， the location of solar cooker in the sun and the shape of the cooker.
2. Statement of the problem:
Design and build a renewable energy system that reaches a high sustained voltage.
Be made from entirely used materials, except for any electrical components.
No require human assistance to work.
Dimensions no longer than 1m×1m×1.5m (l×w×h) and no heavier than 10 kg.
Utilize maximum efficiency of the renewable energy through design.
We use the solar cooker to cook or to boil the water, which means to heat them. Every set of sunlight owns a certain amount of energy. The solar cooker’s reflectors were used to collect the sunlight. With the special reflecting angle, the sunlight will be able to gather at a certain point, where the sunlight was then turned into thermal energy, the heat, through the process of being absorbed by the dark surface of the cooker. The temperature of the cooker will reach up to a certain point, at which the energy the cooker loses every minute is the same as the energy it absorbs every minute ， then the food inside will be cooked.
Real life examples and situations:
In South Africa, there is a project that is seen as a technology to support the community, people there are willing to use it as a special tool for cooking, because it is Eco-friendly and is convenient to use. The solar cooker is discussed by Zambia and Kenya in Technology Needs Assessment (TNA). Zambia thinks that the solar cooker is a good way to reduce the time and labor people spent on cook and cleaner to the environment. However, the problem is the lack of investment and the multiple and inappropriate design for solar cooker.
In our daily lives, we can use the solar cooker in some particular places especially in some high altitude places like Nepal and Tibet, those places gain relatively longer periods of direct rays from the sun than do many other areas of this planet. And the higher elevations allow them a greater abundance of unfiltered; or rather less filtered rays from the sun, giving greater energy intensity to the UV rays which makes the solar cooker works in a higher efficiency.
The shape and size:
The best shape of the solar cooker is semi sphere and the best size of its size is: the radius (2.71 feet), the height (1.85 feet), the distance from the focus to the bottom (1 foot).
1. Panel: As for the panel, the materials used are usually shiny silver metal (or any item with that) that could reflect the sunlight better than absorb it. Things like aluminum foil, silvered or aluminized lens are the most common.
2. The cooking container: The dark colored metal or pottery (usually for warming the cold food) pots. Black cupboard can also be used, but only for the simplest form.
3. Supporting structure: Since there are many types of solar cookers, the materials used to build their main structures are also different. (Naming them with their appearance)
1>panel cookers: Mainly built with panels without using other materials. The bottom part of the panel is usually horizontal to help it stand on the ground.
2>box cookers: Often refers to the solar oven. These ovens usually own only one panel. The box part is commonly built out of wood or cupboard (easiest form).
3>parabolic cookers: Special shaped metal frame. You can even use an old umbrella to make an efficient cooker.
The situation of the solar cooker in extreme weather:
A report said that the solar cooker is an appliance that is similar to an oven, but it uses heat from sunlight to cook food instead of gas or electricity. Using solar cookers to cook obviously requires a large amount of sunlight, which means that it’s difficult to use during winter months, on rainy days or other weather with not so much sunlight. Cooking also takes a significantly longer time than cooking by traditional methods. Users must make a plan about their cooking time and maximize the use of sunlight so that they can use the best time of using solar cooker—noon.
The solar cooker is not as efficient at remaining heat as conventional cooking means. Factors like wind, rain, and snow can seriously affect the usage of solar cookers, and in such weather conditions, even the food is well cooked, it will lose its warmth at an unbelievable rate afterward.(Reference: Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Solar Cooker) In that case, people can easily find out that weather affects solar cookers’ usages a lot—no matter what the time it is, as soon as solar cookers can’t get enough sunlight, it is not a good option to cook food.
