Choctaw Code Talkers of World War I
What were they?
They were a group of Choctaw Indians from Oklahoma who pioneered the use of Native American languages as military code.
When? It started during World War I
Why? The Germans (who spoke perfect English) intercepted all the English and American codes. The English-speaking countries needed another tactic to pass information without being discovered by the Germans.
How did this tactic come about? One day the Colonel A. W. Bloor., overhearing two Choctaw Indians (who served in the Infantry in France) speaking with each other, noticed that he could not understand them. So, he realized that if could not understand them, the same would happen to the Germans, no matter how good their English skills.
Advantages of this technique? Many Native American languages have never been written down. Americans could use the telephone openly without fear that their messages would be deciphered.
More about them:
This tactic was first used on: October 26, 1918, when Colonel Bloor ordered a withdrawal of two companies of the 2nd Battalion.
Result: The movement was successful.
Evidence of the effectiveness of the Choctaw code: A captured German officer confirmed they were "completely confused by the Indian language and gained no benefit whatsoever" from their wiretaps.
Disadvantages: In the Choctaw language many words did not exist so they had to improvise. Ex: "little gun shoot fast" for "machine gun.“
