This essay will examine the methods dealing with air pollution and some facts about the situation of air pollution. And talking about the methods to tackle the problem, there are some types of engineering involving in. For example, automotive engineers who work with machines, chemical engineers who work for manufacturing the chemical products and material engineers who develop materials can do an impact on air pollution.
Air pollution, one of the most serious pollutions, is leading to a worse situation which shows a tendency to harm human’s health more because of all the air pollutants especially articulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). So how could engineers deal with it through the methods we know today? I think there are ways to solve it by updating the fuel level and the engines of cars that can reduce air pollution, and by exploring the new clean fuel which would produce fewer air pollutants.
One of the methods which can address the air pollution is updating the fuel. As we all know that fuel burning causes air pollution, as it produces a large amount of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) that pollute the air a lot. A piece of news in 2013 reported that coal burning takes up 18% of the total air pollutants. (China daily). Besides, if the fuel is updated, then it’s sure that there are fewer air pollutants caused by fuel burning. This can make a difference not only in industry but also in transportation especially nowadays when the fuel is the main materials to produce the energy needed. There is no doubt that engineers are working on it although the impact of this is not obvious enough to observation in a short period. But after a few decades, the air pollution caused by fuel burning and the amount of fuel used for burning to produce energy would be much less than today as long as the technology about this flies. So for engineers, it’s worthy working on updating the fuel.
Updating the engines of cars is also a useful way to tackle this problem. A piece of news reported in 2014 said that scientists agree that vehicle is a main source of air pollution which ranges from 10 percent to 50 percent. (Wu) According to this, people can see the necessities of developing the engines of cars. It is also mentioned that proton may be possible to improve drivability and fuel efficiency said CVT variants when the engines are mainly internal-combustion engines which has a really low usage rate (no more than 40 percent) of fuel like petrol. (Sze) In addition, there are some cars that go on electricity showing up, and these cars would produce no tail gas so that they do not pollute the air. If we can make the usage rate of fuel higher or change the form of energy that allows a car to run, which means that we can use fewer fuel if we want a certain amount of energy, the air pollutants will be fewer since we do not use the materials as many as the technology hasn’t developed so far. Thus, the condition of air pollution will not be so serious, or it can even be solved as the technology develops to an unbelievable level. Therefore, this is also a great method to work out the problem with air pollution.
Another means to deal with air pollution is to explore new fuels. Different fuels produce different amount of pollutants, for example, natural gas produces fewer pollutants than coal does. An article submitted in 2010 gives some information about natural gas hydrates, which is known as a new fuel, that it stores a large amount of natural gas. (Harrison) For the factories that still uses coal as the main energy source, if they replace the coal to the natural gas hydrates, a much cleaner fuel with larger energy stored, the air pollution of course would be less serious. And there are some countries have already explored this kind of fuel. For instance, ethanol petrol holds some benefits. An article down in 2009 mentioned that ethanol petrol produces fewer negative effects on human health and air pollution as it emits smaller amounts of fine particulate matter and greenhouse gases than before, the time ethanol petrol hasn’t be invented. (Mattern) It is therefore reasonable to say that exploring new fuel is a helpful way to make the air pollution less serious.
In conclusion, from the reasons and examples all above, updating the fuel level, updating the engines of cars and exploring the new clean fuel does work on retarding the air pollution. The power of technology is unimaginable, so if engineers keep working to develop the techniques, the air pollution would be completely solved in a day.
