‘march of progress’ – believe that although gender equality has yet been achieved in the family, they argue that there has been gradual progress.
E.g. parents now socialise their children in a more equal way then in the past and have similar aspirations for them
Other feminists criticise liberal feminists for failing to challenge the underlying causes of women’s oppression and for believing that changes in the law or that people’s attitudes will be enough to bring equality.
Believe the main reason women are oppressed is due to capitalism not men.
Their oppression forms several functions for capitalism; reproduce the labour force, absorb anger (‘takers of shit’) and act as a reserve army of cheap labour.
They argue that the family must be abolished at the same time as a socialist revolution replaces capitalism with a classless society.
Argue all societies have been founded on patriarchy – ruled by men
Key division in society is between men and women
Men are seen as the enemy
Family and marriage are the key institutions – men benefit from women’s unpaid domestic labour and sexual services
Encourage separatism – women must organise themselves to live independently.
Some argue it’s too extreme
Liberal argue that radical fail to recognise that women’s position has improved.
Argue that women face different experiences of the family
White feminists neglect black feminists of their experience of racial oppression
Black women use the family as support against racial oppression
Other feminists argue that difference feminists neglect that women have the same experience of domestic violence. E.C.T.
The theories are dated, as they fail to account for recent social and economic changes such as women’s use of divorce and the success of young females within education etc.
Ignore the positive aspects of family life
Postmodernists argue that we have a possibility of some choice in the creation of family relationships, like choosing when to have children and choosing divorce.
Tend to neglect the meanings families have for individuals and how family member interprets family relationships.
