I - Brief
Climate change and the need to manage diminishing fossil fuel reserves are, today, we are facing two biggest problem in this planet.
In order to secure the future for ourselves and generations to follow, it is widely accepted that we must act now to reduce energy consumption and cut greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide. World leaders have resolved to tackle global warming by signing the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty committing signatory countries to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases from 1990 levels.
The world is dependent on fossil fuels for it’s energy supply. Currently, fossil fuels account for 80% of the world’s energy consumption.(Jared Skye,2015) However, fossil fuels take millions of years to form and our reserves are depleting rapidly. This means that fossil fuels are non-renewable resources and society needs to find an alternative energy supply.
In 2014, carbon dioxide accounted for just over 80% of the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. Fossil fuels are also responsible for a significant amount of land, water, and air pollution beyond their CO2 production. For example, coal mining brings solid wastes to the surface that would normally remain underground and the areas around a mine can remain barren for generations if due to the lack of proper topsoil. The burning of coal for energy also produces many different types of particulate matter that pollute the air. The finest of these particles can be inhaled deeply and cause various respiratory health problems in people living around the power plant. These pollutants make their way into the water cycle and fall the the ground as acid rain, which can destroy land and pollute large bodies of water.
Renewable energy sources are not without their environmental impacts. Wind turbines can impact migrating bird species and dams can severely disrupt the ecology of surrounding areas. There is also an argument that renewable energy options are not as efficient as fossil fuels; however this is purely an economic argument. When one factor in the various non-financial costs of fossil fuel use such as pollution, climate change, and the impact on biodiversity, renewable energy is actually far more efficient than fossil fuels.
There are a lot of good reasons to move toward the use of renewable energy both now and in the future. However, with time go by, we will no longer have many options. Whether it's you specifically or your grandchildren, fossil fuels will be left behind at some point. The question now is whether society wants to transition away from fossil fuels on its own terms or be forced into it by desperate necessity sometime down the line..
Statement of problem: To solve this problem we should use biomass to be the energy which can light a bulb. We should make a model which can provide renewable energy.
This model should be made by ourselves.
This model should also should provide renewable energy which is able to light a bulb.
Our renewable energy is biomass energy.
Our project should also be pretty and attractive.
II Research Solution:
• Research and Generating Ideas
Have you ever heard the term the "3Rs"? If you have, you might have wondered what it meant. 3Rs refers to three terms often used when talking about waste: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Reducing is cutting back on the amount of trash we make, reusing is finding a new way to use trash so that we don't have to throw it out, and recycling is using trash to remake new goods that can be sold again.
Why should we use the 3Rs? It's not like we need to worry about what happens to our trash after we put it in the trashcan, right? Wrong! Think about how much you toss out each day. If you multiply that by the 6.7 billion people on our planet... That's a lot of trash! Our landfills can only hold so much garbage. If we keep producing so much waste, we'll run out of room. Using the 3Rs will help us cut back the amount of trash we throw away.(kids of USA)
How to make a lemon battery?
Have your older friend or an adult strip 2 inches of insulation off the copper wire. Clip the 2 inches of bare wire with the clippers. Straighten out the paper clip and cut about 2 inches of the straightened steel wire, or use a 2-inch piece or strip of zinc. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough spots on the ends of the wire and paper clip or piece of zinc. Squeeze the lemon gently with your hands. But don't rupture the lemon's skin. Rolling it on a table with a little pressure works great.
Push the pieces of the paper clip and the wire into the lemon so they are as close together as you can get them without touching. Moisten your tongue with saliva. Touch the tip of your wet tongue to the free ends of the two wires. You should be able to feel a slight tingle on the tip of your tongue and taste something metallic.
We often plant trees to show that we want to protect the environment. Therefore we think why we don’t make a tree to show our idea about this project. We search some pictures about the tree. Afterwards we planed to do something to make our model more beautiful. So why we just draw a tree to make it more colorful. It also shows a idea which we want to make the environment more suitable for human to live in. By Xavier
Biomass is one of the best clear and convenient power.Compared to other renewable energy,biomass has greater advantage.Using the biomass not only can product the power,but also can clean our environment.Using the lemon to product electricity is the best example for biomass.The activity of two kinds of sheet metal is no same, such as copper and zinc, which side of the metal sheet more active (copper) and acid substances in fruit chemical reaction produces a positive charge, another piece (zinc) will produce a negative charge, then connect a light emitting diode at two pieces of metal.When the current through the light emitting diode, light emitting diode is lit.It’s a good way to product electricity with lemon,however,use the fresh lemon also is a kind of waste,this doesn’t conform our original idea that to protect environment and use renewable energy.For this reason,we wanted to use other acidic substance to replace the lemon. We decided a make a model about Biomass, Biomass included a lot of kinds of energy. It means we can use a lot of way to generate the electricity. Like getting energy from wasted food or wasted planet. The principle is to use fermentation to produce ethanol to generate the electricity. We know it’s almost impossible to use fermentation to generate electricity. First, we have no ideas about how to make it, second, we can show it immediately., third, the voltage is not stable. Then we began to think about fruit the battery. Fruit battery is a kind of battery that related to fruit. Not every fruit can be a battery, it must be acidic or alkali. Like lemon or tomato. After getting the basic material, the next one is metal, two kinds of metal. Copper and Zinc or aluminum and Zinc. positive ion and negative ion in an acidic or alkali solutions can generate electricity, that’s the principle of fruit battery. There is another problem, the voltage is too low, every lemon can only provide 0.9V. Second problem is lemon is fruit, it’s not a wasted thing, it’s a food, it means if we put it as a battery, it wasted food. It’s not suit the recycle things ideas. Finally, we choice the vinegar as our battery, vinegar is liquid, it’s easy to add or drop, and we can use wasted vinegar, it’s a “green” idea. After choosing the material, we began to think about the container, the container must be big enough to held two metal pieces, and it must be easy to cut, and easy to carry, so we choice jelly box. It’s small and easy to get, also it’s a recycle thing. To get enough voltage, the light bulb must be parallel to make every bulbs to have equally voltage.
Power generation with vinegar is such a great idea because we found that obsolete and expired vinegar also can generate electricity. Chinese people like dumplings, they dip vinegar to eat dumplings, however, these used vinegar is often dumped. So we can say that it is very environmentally friendly. For this model, we can see future of new energy. The LED lights we used are also one of the symbol of environmentally friendly new energy.
III- Design and Develop
2 Clean the boxes, and prepare the vinegar.
1 Prepare the jelly boxes
4 Cover the boxes with tapes.
3Full the boxes with vinegar.
6 Connect all the electric wires.
5 Stick the steel into the box
7 Take the LED light on the electric circuit.
IV – Test and Evaluate Solution
We tested the battery, and we found that the voltage is a little low, it only light two LED lights and it can’t afford the sound and light at the same time. So for the new product, I think we can add more jelly boxes or try different kinds of metals.
V - Refining the design or Redesign
In addition, although our work is not beautiful but the applications and advantages also are very useful, obvious and easy to use, like save resource.
This device can make living trash that in our house be used in the best way. Our product not only solve the living rubbish to release, but also improve the our quality of life.ake the environment more suitable for human to live in. By Xavier
