Hi my name is Trevis Griffin Jr. aka Coach Griff. I have managed the high school basketball team for four years and am currently managing the girls’ soccer team. I chose to coach for my senior project because, I felt like it would help me choose what I would want to do in the future, since I plan on majoring in sports management. There is two sides when it comes to sports management; a business side and a coaching side. After high school, I plan on attending Kennesaw state university or West Georgia to further my education.
While working on my research paper about, how to become a coach, I found a lot of information that helped me during the season. Some of the stuff I researched made me realize not all coaches are the same, but they do similar things and use past coaches experiences and apply it to how they coach. Another thing is it takes a lot of time and effort and depending on the age group, it requires more responsibility. It can also take away from family time, but your family learns to adjust most of the time, unless your family is just a basketball family and understands. In order to be a good coach, sometimes you need to make sacrifices and adjustments even if you're not used to it, because it comes with the job.
My product briefly shows what I learned in my research paper and from my facilitator. You can hear me talking, and reminding the players to box out, rebound, and hold the follow through when shooting a free throw. I realized when it comes to coaching younger kids that you must be very repetitive so, they can learn and be consistent with their game. Some of the problems I had while coaching, was trying to manage and coach I couldn’t make all the games, I had to coach because the times or places didn’t work. My facilitator told to make as many as I can and that it was okay if I missed a few games.
The topic that I chose, coaching really helped me get a feel for what is was like to be a coach instead of a player or a manager. It was a different kind of feeling having kids actually listen to what I had to say and taking my advice and doing as told. It gave me a taste of what it would be like if I wanted to do this for my career. I plan on majoring in sports management and there is two sides to it a coaching side and a business side I'm still unsure which one I want to do, but at least the senior project gave me an idea.
The senior project taught me a lot and what I learned while researching I applied to my coaching and also learned a lot from my facilitator Coach Larry. I had a lot of fun during the season and we had a successful year and ended 8-5 and lost In the elite 8. Thank you! for taking the time to read this and I hope you like my presentation, hope you have a nice day.
