REVIEW: ...having this ministry BY the MERCY of God.
God's mercy #1 Conversion
#2 Office, Apostle, Minister
#3 Steward Fruitful and Faithful in Office
2 Corinthians 3:5
A. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves (not our stewardship, God's mercy)
B. to claim anything as coming from us
C. but our sufficiency is from God
D. who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant
1 Corinthians 15:9-10
A. For I am the least of the apostles (God's mercy)
B. unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
C. But by the grace of God I am what I am (God's grace)
D. and his grace toward me was not in vain.
On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, (Good Stewardship)
E. though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. (God's Grace)
4:2 but by manifestation (open statement) of the truth
POINT 1) Paul declared the Truth Openly. (Clearly, Publically)
Manifest: to cause something to be fully known by revealing clearly and in detail
Exhibition: A lawyer may say, "Your honor, I enter into the court's evidence: exhibit A"'
lawyer wants everyone to see, notice: clearly, openly, fully.
Art Exhibit Shown, versus Private/ Personal.
Tech Exhibit Shown to Sell, versus research hidden from competitors.
2 Corinth 3:12. we use great plainness of speech / bold:
: free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage.
: freedom in speaking, frankly
: "openly” four times,
: “plainly” four times
: without ambiguity.
: we hide and conceal nothing;
Luke Confirms in at least 8 passages: Paul preached openly.
Acts 13:5 Salamis they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.
Acts 13:42 Antioch (v.14), on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue
Act 14:1 Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke....
Acts 17:10 Berea when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue.
Acts 17:1** Thessalonica Paul went in to synagogue of Jews, as was his custom,
and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
Act 17:17** Athens he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and devout persons,
and in the marketplace every day with those who were there. Acts 17:22
Act 19:8** Ephesus (v.1) he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly
Acts 18:1 Corinth. (4) And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks. (5) When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. (6) And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles."
4:2 we would commend (commending) ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God.
POINT 2) Paul is Steadfast, Unwavering, Firm, in His Appeal.
A. Commend: to place together
set in the same place. and introduce favorably
to show approval, so others adopt the same attitude—‘to recommend.
to “stand with/by” a friend to introduce or recommend him to others.
B. Not Conceited not Conceited, Self-righteous, Pride. CHAPTER 4:5
For what we proclaim is not ourselves,
but Jesus Christ as Lord,
with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
C. Defending not Boasting CHAPTER 5:11
But what we are is known to God,
and I hope it is known also to your conscience.
(12) We are not commending ourselves to you again
but giving you cause to boast about us,
so that you may be able to answer those
who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart.
I have been a fool! (it is not wise to promote myself)
You forced me to it, (doubting me in front of false teachers) for I ought to have been commended by you. (approved, accepted, defended)
For I was not at all inferior to these super-apostles,
even though I am nothing. (in my self, only God's mercy/ grace)
The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience,
with signs and wonders and mighty works.
HIS ENTIRE IDENTITY IS CHALLENGED 6:8 Treated as Impostors/ deceiver.
I STILL AM an APOSTLE. Fruit does exist.... in Paul's life for a CHRISTIAN.
Proclaiming the GOSPEL.
I do not recant, renounce, retract, take back, withdraw.
--- My Calling by Christ. (APOSTLESHIP)
-- My Proclamation of Christ. (GOSPEL)
I still stand by (commend), the same testimony now, as when I first arrived at Corinth.
There is no such thing as a Partial Apostle, Partial Christian, Partial Gospel.
2Co 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.
A. veil appears in 5x(Moses) 3:13 3:14 3:15 3:16 3:18
John 5:45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
Luke 16:27 he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house-- for I have five brothers--so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'"
B. veil appears 2x (gospel, Jesus, resurrection) 4:3
2Co 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
How are we to understand this phrase: "god of this age/world."
A. "ruler of this world"- Three times in John, Jesus says.
B. a prince or ruler over darkness, twice in Ephesians.
1. We know, and Paul knows: There is only one God.
not to place on a level with Jehovah, God.
used figuratively.... Paul said of certain men, “their belly is their god,”
Indicates who the world serves and obey,
The OT gods were what men "Attributed worship, power, authority, control."
one who is a ruler with power or authority over this world (or this age).
with shared thoughts, desires, values, goals .
POINT 3. Satan has blinded the minds of......... UNBELIEVERS, not neutral souls.
They are not true victims, but willing victims.
They willfully want Satan's Principle to rule them, blind them, so he does.
A. Ruth 1:15 Naomi said, "See, your sister-in-law (Orpah) has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law." (16) But Ruth said, "Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. (17) Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you."
[DIFFERENT RULERS, DIFFERENT gods, EACH WILLING WOMEN]
The Moabite Rulers did not force Orpah to Return
B. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan
with all power and false signs and wonders,
(10) and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing,
because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
(11) Therefore God sends them a strong delusion,
so that they may believe what is false, (12) in order that all may be condemned
who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thess 2:9-12)
C. this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the
darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light,
lest his works should be exposed. (John 3:19-20)
The sinful unbelieving world says, "I love the darkness, and hate the light"
Satan offers, " I will blind your minds so you will always be in the dark."
The world responds, "Yes, your way is right, best, come blind our minds, be our ruler"
Romans 1:19-22 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. (20) For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. (21) For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. (22) Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
D. ROMANS 1. blindness does not precede, but follows unbelief. Those who will not believe, Satan blinds so that they cannot see. Their inexcusable folly was the ground of their judicial blindness. The doctrine thus taught is one clearly recognized in Scripture. Those who resist the truth, God gives up to a reprobate mind. Rom. 1:24, 28
E. Men are slaves to Satan, because they are willingly rebellious against God
F : they perish, for no other reason than that they have drawn down ruin upon themselves, as the effect of their own unbelief
G : a self-determination toward falsehood, and a turning away from the truth,
the reason of which must be traced finally to a perverted will.
In this blinding process Satan was not alone active and guilty, but that the subjects of it cooperated with him, and were guilty during the process and before it.
2 Corinthians 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
POINT 4. GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY TO SAVE, BY SHINING CHRIST IN OUR HEARTS.
A. PHYSICAL LIGHT, CREATION.
1. GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY OVER, CONTROLS, REIGNS, RULES OVER. (GEN 1:2-3)
2. THE INABILITY AND HELPLESSNESS OF PHYSICAL DARKNESS.
3. AT GOD'S COMMAND....HE GIVES CREATES, PRODUCES PHYSICAL LIGHT.
4. LIGHT IS THE EFFECT OF ALMIGHT POWER.
NOT AN EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS, BUT INSTANTANEOUS.
the work of grace on the soul is not an increase, addition, improvement of the light of nature, but it is a new light, created in the understanding
5. GOD ALONE DOES THIS.
6. GOD IS SUCCESSFUL!
B. SPIRITUAL LIGHT, SALVATION.
1. MAN IN SPIRITUAL DARKNESS IS COVERED IN DARKNESS.
2. MAN CANNOT CREATE THE LIGHT, CANNOT CREATE THE SIGHT.
3. AT GOD'S COMMAND...HE GIVES LIGHT (CHRIST),
HE PRODUCES.. SIGHT. (SALVATION, NEW BIRTH)
SPIRITUAL LIGHT AND SIGHT IS THE EFFECT OF ALMIGHT POWER.
4. GOD ALONE DOES THIS IN THE MIND, HEART, SOUL OF HIS PEOPLE.
5. GOD IS SUCCESSFUL IN SAVING HIS PEOPLE.
John 9:39 Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind."
Psalms 146:8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind.
Isaiah 35:5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
Isa 29:18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.
Acts 26:15-18 And I said, 'Who are you, Lord?' And the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. (16) But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, (17) delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you (18) to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'
1. We are to proclaim God's Word and Gospel, Christ: Openly, Plainly, Full.
Not selectively, leaving out a book, chapter, verse, concept
Not regretfully, shamefully, as if we are embarrassed
by the book, chapter, verse, Old Testament, God's Final Judgment, Hell.
2. Then we can have a clear conscience before men and God, in our evangelism
3. You do and should "approve" this local body of believers.
You do and should "approve" your pastor and elders.
You would recommend, introduce favorably, your ministry.
4. When the Gospel is rejected, opposed, ignored, ridiculed,
The problem is not with the Gospel (Do not Tamper with)
The problem is not with our Proclamation (Do not resort to Trickery)
The problem is with the minds of unbelievers, the mind is blind.
5. Satan is Active in Blinding Minds, but Unbelievers are in Allegiance to His Services.
There is no reason to blame Paul, the Pastor, the Elders, the Message.
The fault is with unbelievers.
6. Rejoice, Our own Salvation is due to God's Sovereignty to Shine Christ in our hearts.
Christ still gives sight to the Blind, even today.
Our Salvation is Evidence of His Work.
REVIEW: BY GOD'S MERCY
1. Paul declared the Truth Openly
2. Paul commended, approved His Apostleship, Gospel.
3. The world follows Satan as their ruler....god. "god of this world", theological meaning.
4. The Minds of Men are willfully blind. (God's gospel is open, the eyes are closed)
5. God's Sovereignty to Shine Christ in our hearts.
1. A. Pharaoh was a ruler of a location, and a time period; yet truly under God's authority.
Satan is a rule of a location, and a time period, yet truly under God's authority.
1. Egyptian Citizens were in idolatry, they followed Pharaoh,
they did not seek to leave Egypt at all,
more spiritual slaves of Idolatry as citizens, than the Jews were physical slaves.
2. The Soldiers killed the hebrew infants? Why? Willful service.
The Hebrew Midwives disobeyed Pharaoh.
3. The Citizens never joined the Hebrew children in physical slavery,
"Moses gave up being in Pharaoh's House, no Egyptian citizen would give up"
They never asked, "Can we leave Egypt/ Pharaoh with you"
(Rahab sought mercy from Joshua)
B. Nebuchadnezzar, told nation to bow down to golden image; they obeyed. Willful Service.
Shadrach, Mesach, Abednego didn't.....and they survived the furnace.
Matthew 23:16-26 Jesus declares Pharisees are Blind, Six Times; and Matt 15:14
A veil upon men's heart, when they read the Law of Moses.
2 Corinthians 3:12-15.
2 Corinthians 4:4- [GILL] In whom the god of this world hath blinded,.... The description of the persons to whom the Gospel is hid, is here further carried on; in which the character of Satan is given, who is here styled "the god of this world"; just as he is by Christ, "the prince of this world", Joh_12:31 not because he had any hand in the making of it, or has any concern in the government of it, or in the disposal of men or things in it; but because of his influence over the worst, and greatest part of the world; which lies in wickedness, under the power of this wicked one, being led captive by him at his will; who have voluntarily given themselves up to him, and whose lusts they will do; and so declare themselves to be his children, and him their Father, yea, their god: the influence he has over them is, he

Paul did preach and teach among them
Paul did not take compensation from them.
Now that he is travelling elsewhere for evangelism, they are very hesitant on the fence

this knowledge of God in Christ is not a mere matter of intellectual apprehension, which one man may communicate to another. It is a spiritual discernment, to be derived only from the Spirit of God. God must shine into our hearts to give us this knowledge. Matt. 16:17; Gal. 1:16; 1 Cor. 2:10, 14
And that they which see might be made blind; that such who are wise and knowing in their own conceit, who fancy themselves to have great light and knowledge, to have the key of knowledge, and to have the true understanding of divine things, and to be guides of the blind, such as the Scribes and Pharisees, might be given up to judicial blindness and hardness of heart, so as to shut their eyes, and harden their hearts against the Gospel, and the truths of it, and which was in judgment to them: such different effects Christ and his Gospel have, as to illuminate and soften some, and blind and harden others; just as some creatures, as bats and owls, are blinded by the sun, whilst others see clearly by the light of it; and as that also has these different effects to soften the wax, and harden the clay;
Blindness is a figure for moral and spiritual ignorance and insensibility, and helplessness in general. Cp. Isa_29:18; Isa_35:5; Deu_28:19; Job_12:25; Isa_59:9-10.
Satan has created a system that panders to the depravity of unbelievers and drives them deeper into darkness. In addition to being dead in their trespasses and sins (Eph. 2:1), veiled from the truth (2 Cor. 3:15), haters of light and lovers of darkness (John 3:19–20), unbelievers walk “according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience … [living] in the lusts of [the] flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and [are] by nature children of wrath” (Eph. 2:2–3). They are “of [their] father the devil, and [they] want to do the desires of [their] father” (John 8:44). All the evil of the human heart—crime, hatred, bitterness, anger, injustice, immorality, and conflict between nations and individuals—is pandered to by Satan’s agenda. The world system he has created inflames the evil desires of fallen people, causing them to be willfully blind and love their darkness.
