Lopez 1 Tiffani Lopez JoAnna Bradfield Engl 1b 18 May 2016 Too Cool For School All my time in high school, I remembered girls obsessing over are the popular sunflower printed shorts American Apparel had released. It was the beginning of my sophomore year in high school and I had just discovered what high waisted shorts were. After seeing my first pair on this Senior at school who was the hippest of the hip, I knew I had to get my hands on a pair. Luckily there was an American Apparel store in our local mall, Victoria Gardens so it wasn’t any trouble. Keep in mind I'm only 14 or 15 and I don't know a thing about fashion. So I went in on a weekend morning, right when the store had opened. First thing I noticed were the mannequins hanging from the ceiling. Automatically I thought this store was weird but something about the vibe had me intrigued. I notice the employees staring at me as I walk in not saying a word, no customer service. Whatever. I was there for the high waisted shorts. I find them and they had them stocked in almost every color. Including, yes you guessed it, the sunflower print. I grabbed almost every color. My excitement over the clothes… OR All my time in high school and even up to date, I have always been a huge fan of American Apparel. Whether it was the hanging mannequins or the so neatly organized racks, the store has always been so hip. Unlike stores like Target and Ross, American Lopez 1 Apparel is not located in every city. So lucky me, there was one located in the local mall. American Apparel has always given off the vibe that it is a very materialistic brand. In other words only the cool of the cool know how to wear it and look good in it. But one thing that the brand does well is the whole “you can’t sit with us” type logic. In term where you don’t look like us, you’re not one of us. American Apparel tends to be worn by what many refer to as burger head punk hipsters. The ones who go to ska backyard shows wearing the oh-so-hip AA, smoking their Marlboro cigarettes, and nine out of ten shows do not care for the music culture and simply care about the what is thought to be “I’m better than you because I wear American Apparel” fashion statement.
