-She has volunteered as a hospice for 10 years, 4 years as a child welfare legislative advocate, 3 years board vice chair at Highland Rivers Health and the founder/director of a leadership club for girls for the last 5 years.
What did I learn?
- I learned that it helps children while they are undergoing treatments.
How does my research paper connect to my product? The Forever We dolls and the Friendsgiving party helps support the children with what they are going through.
Why I chose this?
I chose this for my senior project because I have a huge heart for volunteering for others. I love trying new things and facing my fears by putting myself out there. It makes you have a new outlook on life.
Career Link to Product
Volunteering and play therapy with patients links to my project by the Friendsgiving Party. The party helped with Katelyn (the patient we did the party for) by being out there and interacting with kids. We wanted to surround her by everything that she loves. Katelyn is going through a lot and this lifted her spirits.
Even though I do not want to be a professional play therapist, I would like to continue to volunteer with Forever We and make a difference in the lives of children.
Katelyn is thirteen years old and is a survivor from brain cancer (Pineoblastoma).
She was diagnosed March 5, 2015 after her parents realizing she wasn ’t walking straight at home or school and not acting like her normal self. At eleven years old she was admitted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The doctors removed 95% of the tumor.
Katelyn has been struggling with speech and hearing as well as vision, her mom has to do a lot of it for her.
She is bound to wheel chair.
What I Learned about me?
I had some struggles with using my time wisely with getting together with my facilitator during the week with school and work. Especially getting the party together and meetings with the girls. It was pretty difficult trying to meet up with Katelyn because of her hospital and physical therapy going on. She was exhausted from it all.
I found out that my time management skills were not that good and it was challenging for me in that area.
I also learned that I really enjoy giving back to others and making a difference. That it doesn ’t take much to do something for someone else.
What will I do Next?
Where are you off too? I am going to attend Chattahoochee Technical college in the fall to become a dental hygienist.
How did doing the Senior project help you with your decision? It helped me be more confident in talking to people and also giving more of myself.
