The American Revolution
Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 and was one of our founding fathers. He wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence. He was a republican and voted for individual rights which motivated us to break away from Britain.
Thomas Jefferson was many things, he was a lawyer, planter, president, vice president, republican and so much more. He was born in Virginia, but was from English ancestry. He wanted to give slaves their freedom, and practiced law.
When it was time, he represented Virginia in the Continental Congress. That was when he wrote the Declaration of Independence, was a wartime governor, and drafted a law for religious freedom. He became the first Secretary of State, second Vice President, and third President.
Him and James Madison formed the democratic-republican party to go against the federalist party. He did this during the formation of the first party system. Jefferson organized the Louisiana Purchase to almost double the country’s territory.
When Jefferson was reelected in 1804 that is when it got difficult. It stated with the trial of former Vice President Aaron Burr for killing Alexander Hamilton. There were also threats against the United States from Britain and King George.
Some fun facts about him is that he spoke many languages and was well versed in linguistics. He only had one full length book called Notes on the States of Virginia. He owned many plantations and the plantations were worked by slaves. He also was the third of ten children.
Thomas Jefferson’s story is one that needs to be shared repeatedly.
