Hello, my name is Summer Chambers. My goal for the future, is to open a homeless shelter that stays open all year. For senior project, I chose to do a clothing drive for the needy. The process was long and very time consuming. I do not regret choosing to do a clothing drive. It was, overall, an amazing opportunity.
I chose to do my research paper on homelessness among veterans in the United States. Researching this topic really opened my eyes to the world around me. The rate of homeless veterans has increased at a very alarming rate over the years. The main thing I learned while doing this research, is that it is almost impossible to get help from the government in a timely manner. Waits to get things like disability, for example, are outrageous. America's homeless veterans should be the top priority.
My final product was a clothing drive for the needy. This really ties everything I have done together. After doing the research paper, I really got curious, so I decided to search the poverty rate of Canton. In 2015, 32% of Cantons families were living below the poverty level. It was alarming to see the rate so high. Organizing the drive was easy, but all of the work I had to do to prepare for it was difficult. The main obstacle I had to overcome was balancing school work and preparing for the drive. I overcame this obstacle by getting all of the help I could.
In the future, I want to open a homeless shelter that stays open year round. Most shelters only open when the temperature drops below freezing or is extremely hot. Doing this project and having the opportunity to meet all of the people I had the chance to, made me absolutely positive that this is what I want to do. The main thing I learned about myself, is that I need to be more thankful for what I have and I don’t need to take anything for granted.
Homelessness is something that each person witnesses every single day. We can all help with this problem. Thank you so very much, for taking time out of your day to listen to my presentation.
