THE PRIEST ARE AT FAULT - 4:1-10
God has a case against Israel.
What is missing?
Faithfulness – “reliability” “dependability” you can’t trust.
Kindness – “love” “mercy” – there is on direct word that accurately translates from the Hebrew into English. Loving mercy and kindness are the best.
Knowledge of God – They do not know His ways, His laws, His character and why is this? It was because the Priests has not instructed them (4:6). The Priests “have forgotten God and His law!
The people become like their priests (4:9). They have stopped paying attention to the Lord (v.10b)
Alarmingly, this is the situation found in many churches today. The pastors are not preaching the word. Instead they proclaim the “prosperity gospel” which is nothing more than pagan tripe! The prosperity gospel is a “Christianized” bastardization of the teaching known as “The Law of Attraction.” The law of attraction says that which we declare we draw unto ourselves! If we have negative energy, we attract negativity unto ourselves or conversely, when we proclaim positive things we attract positive things unto ourselves. This perverted theology is the basic teaching that is espoused by many of the most popular TV preachers in America for personal profit. You can hear it on TBN from Joel Osteen, Joyce Myers, T.D. Jakes, Mike Murdock, Creflo Dollar; there are too many to list!
Meanwhile, while these false teachers proclaim their ear tickling garbage, multitudes within the church disregard the true teachings of God and live like the pagans surrounding them! Hosea condemned the false teachers and the people.
They pig out on my people’s sins. They can’t wait for the latest in evil. The result: You can’t tell the people from the priests, the priests from the people. I’m on my way to make them both pay and take the consequences of the bad lives they’ve lived. They’ll eat and be as hungry as ever, have sex and get no satisfaction. They walked out on me, their GOD, for a life of rutting with whores. "Wine and whiskey leave my people in a stupor. (Ho. 4:8-11 The Message)
Malachi 2:7 "For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and men should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
Jeremiah also chastised false prophets for refusing to preach God’s word.
Jer. 23:21-22 "I did not send these prophets, but they ran. I did not speak to them, but they prophesied. "But if they had stood in My council, then they would have announced My words to My people, and would have turned them back from their evil way and from the evil of their deeds.
According to Hosea, the entirety of God’s creation suffers due to the defection of God’s people (4:3)!
What is present. (v.2)
Swearing, deception, murder, stealing and adultery, bloodshed follows bloodshed! How terrible it is when society degenerates into debauchery, vice and corruption! Our blessed nation is on the brink of destruction because of the overwhelming scourge of iniquity that we now see as normal life! Gay marriage is not normal! A 50% divorce rate is not normal. Ambushing the police is not normal! Young people dying daily from drugs is not normal! Sin destroys and much sin destroys much!
THE PEOPLE ARE AT FAULT. 4:11-19
Harlotry, wine and new wine have taken away their understanding.
Is wine and strong drink a problem in our society? Any honest person would admit that American’s have an inordinate love affair with beer! Watch any sporting event on primetime TV and you would think every man in America has the mentality of a 14-year-old, is stupid. He slobbers after beer like it is God itself!
Sadly, many of God’s people also drink to excess! This bring the question, should Christian partake in alcohol? There are Christians who regularly drink beer or wine without becoming intoxicated. Therefore, is it a sinful to drink wine, beer and liquor if one does not become drunk?
I think sometimes we frame the question is such a way so as to insure the answer we want! The question for Christians when it comes to social drinking is not is it permissible but is it wise? Is it wise for Christians to drink alcohol?
Consider the following.
Some who drink alcohol will become alcoholics.
Alcohol is always in and around other social vices such as gambling, drugs, prostitution.
Alcohol contributes to other social diseases such as divorce and spousal abuse.
Alcohol is a major cause of highway fatalities.
Even small amounts of alcohol affect our moral reasoning leading people to do things they normally would not do. For example, how many young men deliberately try to get their girlfriends to drink alcohol to make them more likely to engage in sexual activity when they normally would not.
Alcohol is considered sinful by many Christians.
Romans 14:21 It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.
Rather than ask, “can I get away with drinking alcohol?” A believer ought to ask, “what is the wisest course to take when it comes to social drinking?” Ask “how is the best way to honor God and edify the brethren?” Ask, “What is the best way to share the gospel and give witness to Christ?”
1 Thessalonians 5:22 abstain from every form of evil.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
2 Corinthians 8:21 for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man. (ESV)
It is my conviction that the wisest course to take when it comes to social drinking and using alcohol is to abstain totally. I have a hard enough time walking in the Spirit, leaving the flesh crucified, maintaining an honorable testimony while keeping my thoughts pure without clouding my perception with alcohol!
Alcohol induced the Israelites to chase whores and engage in idolatry (4:11-13)! What is it doing to our society?
Hosea pronounces God’s judgment on the men who chase prostitutes. (v.4:14-19)
They are joined to idols, leave them alone! Their liquor is gone; they’ve ingested all their beer (v.18)! Drunken, they are like men wrapped in the wind. They will be ashamed!
THEIR DEEDS WILL NOT LET THEM RETURN
The kings and rulers are like hunters after their own people (5:1). “been a snare at Mizpah and net spread out” – pictures a trap!
All Israel are in bondage to their sin! (5:4)
Verse 4 is one of the most powerful verses in the scripture warning against resisting the grace of God and remaining in sin, especially after God calls us to return.
God’s sure judgment will come – (5:8-9)
Judah has a payday coming also (5:10).
Removing a boundary line was the same as stealing land. During Hosea’s time, Judah and Israel were engaged in civil war. Israel hired Rezin, King of Aram to war against Ahaz the King of Judah who had hired Tiglath-pileser (Jareb, which means ‘the avenging king’ 5:13)king of Assyria (2Kings 16:5-9). Israel was defeated and Judah took some of the land that belonged to Ephraim, the largest tribe. Thus Judah has moved the ancient landmark!
Deuteronomy 19:14 "You shall not move your neighbor’s boundary mark, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the LORD your God gives you to possess.
Even though Judah had no right to take land from Ephraim, they are oppressed and crushed (5:11), because of their moral corruption. Though they hired mercenaries they are defeated because “he was determined to follow man’s command.” (Some translations, “vanity” or “nothingness”).
God is going to judge both Israel and Judah for their sins. (5:14-15).
God will be like a lion who will tear to pieces (v.14) and carry away and there will be none to deliver.
Though God’s judgment will fall on the southern kingdom one hundred thirty years after it falls upon the northern kingdom and though the agents will be different (Babylonia for the southern and Assyria for the northern kingdom), it is equally certain for both. God will use human agencies to accomplish His purpose in judging His people, and they shall not escape (vs. 14)
In verse 15, God says he will go away to His place until they acknowledge their guilt and seek His face. In their trouble they will earnestly seek God. This is the same thing Jesus said when he pronounced judgment on Jerusalem.
Matthew 23:37-39 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. "Behold, your house is being left to you desolate! "For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, ‘BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!’"
The afflict of the Great Tribulation will cause Israel to seek their Messiah!
The promise of restoration after judgment is a running theme in Hosea.
Ho. 3:5 Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king; and they will come trembling to the LORD and to His goodness in the last days.
In your opinion, after reading about God’s anger toward the priests who disregard His word, how do you think God will treat false teachers of our day who pervert God’s word for profit?
Read again 4:14. Do you see that immorality promotes more immorality?
Do you believe America is in a situation like Israel in verse 5:4?
Do you believe the Church needs to acknowledge any guilt and seek God’s face? we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man. (ESV)
