In 1986, 2 spacecraft’s swept past the planet at a distance of 81,500 km. The orbital speed of Uranus is 6.6km/sec (14,763mi/hr). Uranus is also known as the 3rd largest planet in the solar system. In recent times, scientist classify Uranus as an “ice giant”. Uranus’s atmosphere, although it is similar to Jupiter’s and Saturn’s, it contains hydrogen and helium but it has more ”ices” such as water, ammonia and methane along with hydrocarbons. Uranus gets its blue-green colour from the methane gas. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and is reflected back out Uranus’s cloud top. Methane gas absorbs the red portion of the light, resulting in a blue-green colour. Uranus has two sets of rings. The inner system of nine rings, discovered at 1977, consists mostly of narrow dark rings. Also a voyager found an additional two inner rings. An outer system of two more distant rings was discovered by Hubble Space Telescope with telescope images at 2003. Uranus is named after a Greek god of the sky. Uranus’s wind-speeds can get up to 900 km. The Uraniun moons are named for characters created by Alexander Pope and William Shakespeare. The interior of Uranus contain two layers: a core and a mantle. The core is composed of rock and ice and is approximately 0.55 times the mass of the Earth. Furthermore the mantle is composed of water, ammonia and other volatile elements. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Uranus is how odd its rotation is compared to all the other planets. The axis of rotation for every other planet is different other than Uranus which roughly has a perpendicular axis. However, Uranus’s axis is tilted almost 98*.
