TECHNOLOGY AND KITCHEN IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Refrigeration is one of the most embraced technologies in the kitchen nowadays. From the images here, refrigerators back then in the 1920s were majorly out of necessity to preserve food. The refrigerators were small in size and less compartmentalized. Technology was growing by then and the progressive culture of the American population seems to have embraced it quite well. Newer models of refrigerators not only were bigger in size but also more compartmentalized for efficiency and organization. Most of the newer models also run using electricity and generally are much more efficient.
The refrigerators from the later years from this images have more room to accommodate more food and or other items that could be stored as deemed necessary. There appears that the advertisements have most of these images of refrigerators full of items. This partly portrays the aspect of conspicuous consumerism among the Americans. Whereas the advertisements of the older models do not seem to focus on the organization of the interior of the refrigerators nor the much they contain, the newer models clearly demonstrate the aspect of plenty of space to carry as much in the refrigerators. Consumers in most recent advertisements depict a sense of affluence in owning even more than one refrigerator full of stuff which again is in line with the fact that Americans take pride in owning material things which differentiates individuals by putting them into various social strata as poor, middle income or rich people.
From the oldest advertisements, the need for a refrigerator was basically meant for necessity in preserving food for especially for children. The newer advertisements however bring the aspect of the women as the ones manning the territory around the refrigerators whereas men seem to be the ones to bring home what needs to be in the refrigerators. Children here still remain depicted as consumers from the refrigerator savings. It is also notable that with advanced technology in refrigeration of food, men now do not necessarily have to depend on women to serve them. They are invading the refrigerator for ready-to-eat preserved food items. The efficiency that comes with technology in refrigeration seems to have relieved women of the need to be solely responsible for putting meals on the table from the most recent advertisements shown.
In conclusion, the advertisements here generally show the progressive nature of Americans and their attachment to technological growth. With technology in refrigeration comes efficiency in the kitchen.
