Senior Capstone Career Project - Product Work Log
Name: Samantha Zeo
Product: Articles in the Cherokee Ledger Newspaper
Date, Time, & Location: Tuesday, 12/6/16, 4:00 – 4:20 PM, The Cherokee Tribune.
Activity: Went to the Cherokee Tribune on East Main Street to have first Meeting with Mentor.
Commentary: The first meeting with my mentor, Mrs. Johnston, went wonderfully. My mother wanted to meet Mrs. Johnston, so she sat with us during our meeting. We sat down in her office to talk about the several forms and the biography that were due the following day. After the Project Facilitator Agreement form was all filled out, I began to ask her the questions from the Biography of the Project Facilitator form. We finished the Biography up with a selfie of us together. We wrapped up out meeting by talking about when I would be able to come in again to start working towards my Product.
Time Spent: 20 mins
Total Time Thus Far: 20 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Monday, 12/19/16, 11:00 AM – 3:10 PM, The Cherokee Tribune.
Activity: Get a Feel for the Workplace.
Commentary: This time around, I was basically work shadowing for the day. I was able to listen to what the staff was talking about, which was a plethora of things. There was talk about what stories were going into the paper, what was going on in their personal lives (showing that it’s a very open kind of workplace), and phone calls to people that had information they needed for the story that they were writing. Rebecca Johnston put me behind a computer and had one of her staff members show me the ropes on what to do when typing up a story for the paper. They told me that they write one or two stories on their own, and the rest are submissions. I was given several things to type up, which I then put into their systems. I am not sure, though, if what I typed up is actually going to be put into the paper under my name, or under someone else’s. This was an interesting experience, they did make me feel welcome. My nerves, though, were through the roof the whole time I was there because I didn’t want to mess anything up the very first time that I was there.

Activity: Getting Started on my very First Story!
Commentary: Today I got my first story to start on! I was also given a topic to do a side story on. The main story focuses on the 60th class to graduate from Cherokee High School. The side story focuses on the totem pole outside of CHS as well as Squat the Indian. Taking on this story idea was very exciting for me since it’s a huge step up from the basic kind of stories that I write for the school newspaper. Along with working towards completing the story, Rebecca and I discussed things like: what needs to go into every article/story, what kind of schooling/internships I would need to climb my way up to becoming a staff member for a newspaper. She recommended internships as well as working on the newspaper staff in college to get a feel for how things really work. Other than that, it was a pretty easy going day at the Tribune. As part of my hours that I need to spend working on my project myself, I will start by gathering information for the story by interviewing certain people – which is my favorite part of the process, in my opinion. Rebecca also told me that I am more than welcome to stop by the Tribune to work on the story if I run into any issues along the way.

Activity: Working on the Newspaper Stories on my own for the First Time.
Commentary: I worked on organizing all of the people that I need to contact (double checking on emails, names, and phone numbers), and going back over all of the questions I wanted to ask everyone. Over the course of this month, I plan on talking to a couple of former principals and the current one, along with talking to them and the Cherokee County Historical Society to get information on the totem pole and Squat the Indian.
Time Spent: 1 hr. 10 mins.
Total Time Thus Far: 8 hrs. 50 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Tuesday, 2/7/17, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM, Cherokee High School.
Activity: Working on OneNote Senior Project Online Portfolio.
Commentary: As a whole class in my Literature class today, we went down to the computer lab to upload our research papers and our magic forms (Parent/Guardian Agreement Form, Project Facilitator Agreement Form, Student Agreement Form, and the Project Facilitator Biography Form). Trying to upload these forms, however, was definitely a challenge since no one had ever really worked with OneNote before, including myself. Even though there were some hiccups along the way, I was able to upload all of my forms by the end of the class period by tinkering around with uploading them.
Time Spent: 1 hr.
Total Time Thus Far: 9 hrs. 50 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Monday, 2/27/17, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM, Cherokee High School
Activity: Polishing Up Senior Presentation Material.
Commentary: My Literature class went down to the computer lab to start working on our Sway on Docs.com for Senior Presentation so that all of our forms and such will be public – this way the judges would be able to see everything. Adding in another new element to this process was very frustrating, making OneNote seem so much easier than this. Adding something new this late in the school year/project was confusing to me, but I had no control over it. With some tinkering around, I’m sure that everyone – myself included – that we will get the hang of the new components that were added.

Date, Time, & Location: Wednesday, 3/8/17, 9:00 PM – 9:30 PM, My Home (407 Sugar Maple Ct, Canton, GA, 30114)
Activity: Researching Information on CHS and Setting Up Interviews
Commentary: After completing all of my other homework for the night, I opened up my laptop and started to search for background information on CHS for the paper. I went to the “About” page on the CHS website and got a good start on information. I also visited the County page to find Debra Murdock’s email so that I could set up an interview with her. I am also in the process of talking to Todd Miller in an interview as well.
Time Spent: 30 mins.
Total Time Thus Far: 11 hrs. 20 mins
Date, Time, & Location: Thursday, 3/16/17, 4:30 PM – 5:10 PM, Canton Marketplace Target (Canton Marketplace, 2022 Cumming Hwy, Canton, GA, 30115)
Activity: Interview with Debra Murdock
Commentary: Right after leaving Cherokee’s campus, my dad drove me down to the Canton Marketplace Target on exit 19 for my interview with Debra Murdock, one of the former principals. I was pretty nervous about doing this since I have never really held a proper interview before. We met in the Starbucks inside the Target for the interview. It went smoothly and even though that this was the first time that I talked to her, it felt like I had known her for several years. When the interview had ended, we both took a selfie with each other – one of them for my pictorial log. Talking to her was such an honor and I think the interview went fantastically!
Time Spent: 40 mins.

Date, Time, & Location: Saturday, 3/18/17, 5:15 PM – 6:50 PM, My Home (407 Sugar Maple Ct, Canton, GA, 30114)
Activity: Starting the Main Story for the Newspaper
Commentary: I spent the evening drafting up the news story covering Cherokee’s 60th class graduation. I was able to write about my interview with Murdock and about some background information on CHS but since I have not yet talked to Miller, I will have to wait to write about that. I will also have to wait to write the side story since Murdock told me that there was a book in Miller’s desk that would be able to help me out with that.
Time Spent: 1 hr. 35 mins.
Total Time Thus Far: 13 hrs. 35 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Friday, 3/24/17, 10:15 AM – 10:50 AM, CHS Principal Office
Activity: Interview with Todd Miller
Commentary: I was called up during second period to speak with Mr. Miller. Once in his office, we spoke about what my Senior Project was and he provided me with the information on the first two Totem Poles, Squat, and the school flag and colors. The interview went really well. Mr. Miller was very open and welcoming for any students or faculty to walk in the door to talk to him. When the interview was over, we stood out in the main lobby and had Ms. Potts take our picture for my pictorial log.
Time Spent: 35 mins.
Total Time Thus Far: 14 hrs. 5 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Monday, 3/27/17, 2:30 PM – 2:45 PM, Cherokee High School
Activity: Taking Pictures for the Newspaper
Commentary: I took the first fifteen minutes of my Journalism class, with the teacher’s permission, to go and take pictures of the two totem poles and Squat for the Cherokee Tribune. Taking the pictures took a few minutes longer than I anticipated because I had to get the lighting right along with getting everything in frame. When I saw that the pictures were in frame and weren’t too dark or washed out, I went back to class.
Time Spent: 15 mins.
Total Time Thus Far: 14 hrs. 20 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Wednesday, 3/29/17, 5:30 PM – 6:10 PM, My Home (407 Sugar Maple Ct, Canton, GA, 30114)
Activity: Writing the Side Story for the Cherokee Tribune
Commentary: To write the side story for the paper (Squat and the totem poles), I used the information that Mr. Miller had given me. Rebecca, my mentor, had told me that a side story for the paper needed to be anywhere from 400 to 500 words long and I was able to write about 495 words. Now, if need be, she can edit it to wither be shorter or to rearrange the information. Writing this story was fun, in my opinion, because I was able to learn a little about what had happened in CHS’s past.
Total Time Thus Far: 15 hrs.
Date, Time, & Location: Thursday, 3/30/17, 7:00 PM – 7:40 PM, My Home (407 Sugar Maple Ct, Canton, GA, 30114)
Activity: Finishing the Main Story for the Cherokee Tribune
Commentary: A couple weeks ago, I started to write the main story for the Cherokee Tribune. I started by writing some of the background information on CHS and I wrote about Murdock and the interview that I had with her. This time around I was able to fill in the hole that was left – and I filled that with the information that I got from Miller. The interview that I had with him is what I added. The next step in the process is to have my mentor look over what I wrote and get it approved to go into the paper.
Total Time Thus Far: 15 hrs. 40 mins.
Date, Time, & Location: Tuesday, 4/11/17, 4:00 PM – 4:20 PM, The Cherokee Tribune
Activity: Discussing Stories and Getting Product Verification Product Signed!
Commentary: I stopped by the Tribune after school for a short check-in to talk about the stories that I had submitted to be put into the newspaper. My mentor said that what I had only needed some minor tweaks – citing where my information was from, changing an incorrect date, and making sure that everything was 100% correct. I will be emailing her the stories again on Wednesday (4/12) to have her finalize things. She had told me, though, that the stories would be published in the month of April for sure, and possibly this week. There is a chance that I won’t be able to have a physical copy of the newspaper by the time Presentations roll around, but the stories will be in the paper within the upcoming weeks.
Time Spent: 20 mins.

Date, Time, & Location: Tuesday, 4/11/17, 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM, My Home (407 Sugar Maple Ct, Canton, GA, 30114)
Activity: Touching Up the Stories.
Commentary: After completing my other homework that I had, I started to edit the stories like how my mentor had explained to me earlier in the day- double-checking names and dates, along with adding and taking things out. I will be sending them back to her on Wednesday (4/12). I am so close to completing Senior Project!
