Internet Pros and Cons
The Internet is a wonderful tool that has completely changed the world we live in. There are both positive and negative traits to the Internet and many people are not one-sided on the issue of Internet use. A lot of people see both the positive and negative aspects of the Internet. Personally, I believe that as this generation gets older there are many reasons for the Internet becoming worse, such as drama. However, it is difficult to argue that the Internet has not advanced our school in many ways.
Facebook and twitter are used just to see what people are doing and to be nosey. I definitely agree with this statement. One time I could tell a friend was stalking me, because they were going through my photos from a long time ago and they accidently liked one and I got a notification. Mainly, however, people stalk the other's profiles who they don’t like and then start talking bad about that person. This often leads to a Facebook fight and then drama develops. Plus, during half the Facebook fights people say things they wouldn’t say face to face cause there hiding behind a screen. From here, more and more people join and get into it with other people even though it is none of their business. Thompson also stated, “Facebook users really think Facebook is becoming the Big Brother of the internet, recording every single move” (Thompson 169). Here I think Thompson is saying that Facebook is watching over everyone's lives because people share so much about their lives it is difficult not to get involved. With people making constant status updates and adding pictures, it makes it easy for people to find out a lot about people who aren't even their friend. In this day and age, you have to be careful who you provide private information to. There are some crazy people out there who if you post where you are and what you’re doing they will come find you. The Internet has gotten scarier over the years and people can hack your accounts from anywhere.
Dating websites are another negative about the Internet. Some of the dating websites out there today are very dangerous. People think they can just match you to someone based on very loose criteria, such as whether or not you like T.V. In my opinion, this is scary because you never know who you may be talking to. It could be a fake picture of someone hiding behind a screen. Madrigal states, “74 percent of singles looking for a mate now turn to dating sites like eHarmony, Match.com, and OkCupid. These sites use algorithms to pair people up based on answers to a set of questions” (Madrigal 165). Like I said, anyone can fake it and be someone there are not. For example, they can say they like “cheer” and be pretending just to match with a girl, stalk them, and get to know about them.
Positive aspects of the Internet include that some people’s friends and family live long distances away and they want to keep in touch. The Internet makes it convenient and easy to look at their pictures and see how they are doing. Another positive is the privacy button where you can protect all your statuses or tweets. Thompson states, “A twitter account can be “private,” so that only invited friends can read one’s tweets, or it can be public, so anyone can see” (Thompson 172). Thompson is saying that if you don’t want everyone being able to see your tweets/post then you can put your account on private and only your close friends that follow can see what you do and no one else can. I have everything of mine on social media therefore I don’t add people I don’t know. I can connect with Thompson's friend Seery who says, “I have one rule, I either have to know who you are, or I have to know of you” (Seery 172). Setting rules like this one allows people to enjoy the conveniences and entertainment the Internet offers while making safe decisions about who you are giving your personal information out to.
These days, it seems that technology has mainly gotten worse through society there are more negative than positive. People are losing verbal communication skills because they don’t talk to people in person much anymore. It’s all over computers and cell phones that kids use every day in their lifetimes. Kids are also having a ton of screen time which is bad for their eyes. And begin to give them major headaches. Research has shown kids are losing the ability to use their minds for imaginative play. In now days your social media can be checked and stalked by people to where you applied for or for people your trying to get a scholar ship from or your coach so you have to make sure you are good and don’t post anything bad, or it can ruin your future such as your friends posting pictures of you underage drinking or at a party. For instance, I know my friend’s sister one time posted “skipping class” as her status on Facebook one time and she got caught and didn’t get to play in her basketball game and missed a good scholarship because of that. You have to be smart and think about what you post before you do it. Just as Thompson stated “a young woman [was] complaining to her friend about a recent Facebook drama...she told me that she had discovered that’s high-school friends were uploading old photos of her to Facebook and tagging them with her name” (175). The people doing this were just trying to start a fight on Facebook so them photos appear under her name once you type her name in the search bar.
Personally, I see both sides of the argument of whether or not the
Internet is good or bad.
