My name is Ryan Shillcutt, and for my senior project I ran a lacrosse clinic. I chose to run a lacrosse clinic because I have been greatly involved in the Etowah lacrosse community for many years. Also, I plan on majoring in sports management in college, so conducting a sporting event is a great start to have some experience in the field before college. In addition to running the lacrosse clinic, I decided to use the clinic as an opportunity to raise money for a great cause, to help the victims affected by the Louisiana floods this past August. I chose to raise money for this cause because I have family from Louisiana, and although they were fortunate enough to not be directly affected by the floods, I still feel a strong connection with that state and its’ people.
For my research, I decided to focus on how sports and extracurricular activities impact the lifestyles of children involved. While conducting my research, I discovered that not only did competing in extracurricular activities positively affect children on the field, but also in their homes and in the classroom. Children who are involved in sports and extracurricular activities on average have higher grade averages than those who do not participate in these activities. Also, extracurricular activities help improve social interaction, whether it be with other kids their age or adults. I found that overall it is very important for a child to be involved in extracurricular activities because of the benefits towards the child’s development.
The whole purpose of a lacrosse clinic is to get children within the community involved in the game of lacrosse, which is why I chose to research how sports affected a child’s development. While completing my project, there were several obstacles I had to overcome. I had to successfully advertise my clinic in order to get a good number of kids to show up. I also had to reserve the field in order to conduct my clinic, as well as come up with a way to raise money for the Louisiana flood victims. I had to make sure that I had other coaches to assist me at the clinic, because clinics are set up so there is more instruction per athlete, so there had to be several coaches along with myself and my facilitator. After the clinic, I had to calculate the funds raised and successfully send the right amount to the flood victims.
My project as well as my research relates to my major, sports management, because a possible career out of this major can be event planning or even coaching a sport. I got experience with both of these while completing my project. While completing my project, the overall planning portion was definitely the hardest part, because this included advertisement and making sure everything was just right before the day of the clinic. I am glad I decided to do this as my senior project because I now know that I can handle something like this. I also know what kind of work I will be doing if I pursue this type of career.
Overall, I believe that my senior project was very successful because I was not only able to bring the lacrosse community here at Etowah closer together, but I was able to use my senior project for good and help people who were really in need. Thank you all for your time.
