Dr. Farzana Najam
In this world, there are many kind of diseases that can put on risk the life of any human being. Some of them are not dangerous if you detect on time follow with a treatment, some others are dangerous because are detected too late that the treatment is just to relieve the patient and give more time of live. In my own experience to take care a person with a disease is hard and takes a lot of your time. I remembered when I was in my house and received a phone call from my son's school. Ms. Santiago was on the phone and she didn’t hear ok. She said: Mr. Gaona this is Ms. Santiago from Euclid school; I wonder if you have time to stop by the school. It is something very important that I need to talk to you. I was worried because probably I forgot to pay some fees or something like that before to move my son from that school so when I got there she was so bless to saw me and she gave me a hug and she said. Mr Gaona, I am so glad you came as soon as possible the reason why I couldn’t talk to you in the phone is very delicate that is not appropriate to said by phone. Have you talked with Mr Sequera recently? No, I have not. Is he ok? No, he is not; he came to the school asking about your phone number because he lost his phone and he does not have any contact number and his new one. We, sorry Mr Gaona, we are not allowed to give this kind of information to nobody, you know Mr Gaona it is school policy. I'm sorry Mr Gaona. It is ok Ms Santiago, don’t worry, I can reach him, I have his information, but what it is so important that you need to tell me. I don’t think is about my information do you? No, Mr Gaona, the reason is he told me that he wanted to contact you is because he has a serious problem. He made me to promise not to tell you, but in this case I think is more appropriate to tell you so you can be ready to said the right words to him. Mr Sequera has cancer! Mr Gaona. I kept a silence for a moment and I though, we are not best friends why he wants to reach me. I feel sorry for his children because he is a single dad like me. Probably that was the reason, so he feel that we have something in common. Also we helped each other with the kids. But what is cancer, how many types of cancer exist, there is a treatment for that? Cancer is one of many other diseases that affect millions of people in the world, but Multiple Myeloma is one of that cannot detect on time.
What is cancer? Cancer is the cells from our body that divide without stopping and expanse into our tissues. For example, when our body's cells work and have a normal function, those cells grow and divide to form new cells because the body needs them. As a result the cells grow old or sometimes become damaged, they die, so new cells take their place. However, when cancer exist, this normal process is interrupted. The old cells that supposed to die, survive and new cells are born when they are not needed, these cells are the ones that causes tumors. When those tumors are malignant, which means they can increase into, or invade close tissues. Moreover, those cancer cells can break off and travel to distant places in the body by the blood or lymph system and form new tumors. This is called metastatic, and the process which cancer cells travel or spread to others parts of the body is called metastasis
When Cancer Spreads as you can see on the picture.
Cancer cells are different from normal cells in many ways, this is why they grow without control. For example, one important difference is that cancer cells are less functional than normal cells. While normal cells mature into very specific cells types and functions, cancer cells do not. This is why cancer cells continue to divide without stopping. Not to mention, cancer cells are able to ignore signals that normally tell normal cells to stop dividing. Also, cancer cells ignore the process called apoptosis which is a naturally process in the body, Cells that are damage or infected may need to died as a result they don’t harm or contaminate other cells.
There are more than 100 types of cancer, which usually are named for the organs or tissues where the cancer form. For example skin cancer starts in cells of the skin, and breast cancer starts in cells of the breast. In addition, cancer also might be identify by the type of cell that formed them, such as epithelial cells, and plasma cells. More over, let me mention some categories of cancer that begin in specific types of cells.
Carcinoma is one of the most common type of cancer, It is formed by epithelial cells, which are the cells that protect the inside and outside surfaces of the body. For example, adenocarcinoma is a cancer that forms in epithelial cells that produce fluids or mucus. As you can see most cancers of the breast, colon, and prostate are adenocarcinomas.
Lymphoma is a cancer that commence in lymphocytes or T cells or B cell. This type of cancer is a disease-fighting leukocytes cells that are part of the immune system. In lymphoma, abnormal lymphocytes develop in lymph clot and lymph vessels, consequently in others organs of the body. Now let me talk about my friend disease which is Multiple Myeloma.
Multiple Myeloma is a cancer that begins in the plasma cells, which are cells in the immune system that make antibodies, that help the body fight infection and disease. When the body makes too many plasma cells in the bone marrow they became abnormal. The abnormal plasma cells make M proteins, which are abnormal antibodies that produce in the bone marrow and can cause the blood to thicken and could damage the kidneys. Those abnormal plasma cells can form tumors in the bone or soft tissue. When there is just one tumor, the disease is called a plasmacytoma, but when is more than one tumor, the disease is called multiple myeloma.
Multiple myeloma probably not cause signs or symptoms for a long period and is often not found until it is advanced. In addition myeloma tumors can weaken the bone, as a result, there are too much calcium in the blood or hypercalcemia, and damage the kidneys and other organs. As a matter of fact bone pain is a common symptom of advanced multiple myeloma. Other signs and symptoms include frequent infections, anemia, bleeding, numbness or tingling, and weakness.
The treatment for people with multiple myeloma is not standard. Each person received an individual treatment plan that is based on he/she age and general health, results of laboratory and cytogenetic test, symptoms and disease complications, patient's lifestyle and personal preferences. In addition some Hospitals have their own guidelines for treating them. For example my friend the treatment started with chemotherapy that has the function to destroy or control cancer cells. He took these drugs by bloodstream which reach all areas of the body. Even dough the chemo grugs kill cancer cells also damage normal cells as a result he start losing his hair, loss of appetite, and the most important, he has low blood counts. In addition, the doctors recommend him to do the stem cell transplant which means that they need to give him a high-dose chemotherapy, sometimes with radiation to kill the cells in the bone marrow both normal cells and cancer cells. Before that stem cells are removed from his bone marrow or peripheral blood before the transplant. In the laboratory, they need to produce million of new cells to ready for the transplant.
In conclusion, any type of disease is dangerous, especially cancer but with the new technology and science advance could be treatable, unfortunately some cancer are so aggressive that is hard to detect on time and causes serious damage in our body or can cause died. My friend still fighting with this disease and I prayed for him that one day he can be cured.
