Love to volunteer! It’s so cool to give back.
I love to volunteer; I live for it! I love working children and family events. I like The Food Literacy Project. It teaches kids the importance of healthy food choices, and preparing nutritious meals. I like the fact that they work with public schools and families. It is a hands-on project. Volunteers like me prepare food right there at the school, or community organization. The project gardens, and goes so much further that just discussing, a good diet. I am new to this project; I hope to more work with them.
I love volunteering, for military service people and their families. Operation Paperback, collects and sends recycled paperbacks and movies, magazines and puzzles for our troops. I like that I’m finally doing a little to recycle. It is so rewarding to send boxes of books and other materials every month. Our military people, especially families will have limited budgets. It’s so nice, that they can request books, and magazines and during the Holidays we send a little extra. My favorite place to send my gift boxes, are VA hospitals. I feel I’m putting a little joy in someone’s life. I love the thank you letters, they are so heart felt.
I started collecting dresses and prom items for low-income girls, about ten years ago. When Spring comes around each year, I start preparing to collect gently used fancy dresses. It is a very small effort. I started out collecting and fixing up ten or so, now it’s about four. I’ve cut back due to heart complications. Last Spring, I joined in on the Sacramento Public Library’s, “Sashay to The Prom”, effort. They have the public donate dresses and, accessories, and dress shirts, pants, etc., for young guys. The items are given free, so all kids can go o their prom. It is so wonderful; I hope the countless kids that benefitted remembered to send the library a thank you note.
Hands on Sacramento, is a wonderful organization. I worked through them for a few years. I now volunteer through, AARP Create the Good. I enjoyed volunteering with Hands on Sacramento, they offered the very Special Arts Program, for public schools. Kids love this event, it’s almost like a Christmas event. The media is there, parents come. They paint and create, some dance and they all get recognition. It was one of the highlights of my volunteering. I like when we’ve helped families in shelters, at churches that feed the community. I’ve been on the receiving end of community programs in the past, and it’s nice to give back.
