How to Build a Great Website
The internet has changed the way companies do business. It has created new ways to communicate with customers, provided quick access to information, and most importantly it has allowed businesses to generate income. These are just some of the many advantages of having a website. There are many factors to consider when creating a website such as the type of software used, colors and layouts, the best search engines, ways to attract visitors to the site, and ways to generate income.
There are many software programs available to create websites, many of which are free and others that are quite costly. Mobirise is a popular free program that can create attractive and responsive websites. Gary Marshall said, “You've got to love an app whose sales blurb says ‘creating well-designed websites is a real fun’ (sic), especially when it actually is.” Software programs that are available for purchase offer more features than the free ones, and many of these are available through online access and have monthly subscription plans. These programs include automated HTML coding, drag and drop features, and various industry specific templates. Some of the most popular are Weebly, Wix, and Adobe Dreamweaver. Per Fritz, “Weebly is one of the top drag and drop website builders in the world that lets you bring all of your dreams and ideas on the web without knowing any code.” Website design software that is easy to use leaves room for creativity so the designer can focus on features that will attract more visitors to their site.
There are many factors involved in attracting visitors to a website. The two primary factors are color and layout. According to Steven Bradley, “Color communicates meaning, and so we need to be conscious of what meaning we’re conveying when we choose to use one color over another.” Since color creates feelings or emotions, it is important to imagine yourself as a new visitor when designing a website. A balanced layout selection is vital to the user’s experience which can make or break a website. The overall layout can be pleasing to the eye or be so busy that the viewer may even decide to leave the website. It is best to keep layouts simple and ensure there is plenty of white space, which is the space between design elements, such as photos, text, etc. Throughout a website, “it is important to create page elements that draw attention” while at the same time balancing white space (Rocheleau).
An important part of making a great website successful is by using the best search engines. Google is the best search engine in the world and has about 70% of the search engine market (Biswal). Microsoft developed Bing to compete with Google, and at that time they offered some different services. However, today’s search engine services also include “image, web and video search along with maps” (Biswal). Although there are many search engines available today, some just specialize in certain areas or services. One would use these when looking for more specific data so “you can focus your search into the area only and not get items from areas you’re not interested in” (Dotson 6). Therefore, it is vital to know which search engines are best for the type of products or services for the website that is in development.
The way businesses keep visitors coming back to their site primarily depends on the flow, updated content, connecting with viewers, and being compatible with different web browsers. The flow of the website is a primary mechanism that can make a user stay, recommend, or use the site again, though it can also make them not want to use that site again. The flow should make it simple and easy to move about the web page. Though the flow of the webpage should be straightforward and easy to use, it is even more important to add new content consistently. It is essential to connect with customers through social networking, newsletters and having a blog. Young Entrepreneur Council recommends investing time and energy into a website’s blog, and they believe, “By publishing high-value posts consistently, you’ll build your relationship with your readers, resulting in visitors who check back frequently to view your latest posts.” However, none of these strategies will be very useful if the website fails to work with multiple web browsers. Vitaly Friedman states, “It’s important that your website is usable across all major media, whether it be popular browsers, mobile devices, or any other web browsing devices.” All these factors are vital to websites that desire to generate income.
Years ago, many companies created a website with a photo, their address and phone number just to have a presence on the internet. As the internet gained popularity, many companies created a website to generate income. The two main types of corporate websites are designed to sell products or services. For example, when selling products, this would include an online store, offering a shopping cart and the ability to pay through the website. Jane Williams of studioD states, “If you sell products, an online store allows for 24-hour order placement to capture a sale as soon as a customer is interested, as opposed to waiting for your brick-and-mortar store to open, by which time the urge to buy may have passed.” It is no wonder that website redesign has become vital to increasing sales revenue. In one case study reported by David Kirkpatrick, Two Leaves and a Bud Tea Company’s redesign resulted in a 34 percent increase in revenue.
In conclusion, there are many factors involved in building a great website. The internet has provided a ton of options to consider such as which software programs to use, the best search engines to maximize one’s target audience and ways to attract and keep people visiting a company’s website. In today’s competitive marketplace, a company’s marketing strategy must include a website. As technology advances, more than likely there will be other opportunities for businesses to increase their visibility and ultimately their revenue.
