500 Waterfall Dr. Canton, GA 30114 March 29, 2017 Judges, Senior Project Cherokee High School 930 Marietta Hwy. Canton, GA 30114 Dear Judges: Good evening, my name is Nolan Donley. I am a senior at Cherokee High School and today, I am here to present my Senior Capstone Project. I will be attending college at Mercer University to study Mechanical Engineering next fall. I also will walk-on for the football team at mercer next spring. I can play a total of five instruments including piano, which I began learning at the age of four. It was my love for music that led me to compose a song for my project this year. In my research paper, I decided to look at the effects of how learning to play music at an early age affected brain development. I researched many experiments and projects that determined if learning an instrument at an early age made any significant difference in a person's ability to learn. I learned that learning to play an instrument at an early age seems to have no downside. Music's importance in society is unmatched and the affect it has on the brain and the brain's development cannot go unnoticed. Learning an instrument at an early age proves to give a definite advantage to those individuals throughout their life. For my project, I decided to compose a song. There are many obstacles that I had to overcome to complete my product this year. First, I had to learn many skills that are not music related. One of these most important skills was time management. This was the first project that I had to complete over the course of an entire year. Completing this product gave myself a sense of accomplishment, while at the same time challenged my abilities. This topic relates to many careers in music including music composition and music education. I have learned that my love for music is true; however, I still believe that this is not a career path that I would like to take. This project has been a fun yet challenging task to complete. While I was reluctant to start at first, I am happy that I choose to do this as my product. Again, I would like to thank you for your time and may you all have a wonderful rest of your evening. Sincerely NolanD ni
