Hi, my name is Nicholas Bartosz and I am a senior at Etowah High School. I was a part of the football team and baseball team this year and I've always had an overwhelming enjoyment for sports. My goal is to one day pursue a career in the sports field that gives me the best opportunity to succeed, whether it be coaching, training, announcing or medicine. I chose to train and coach a kid for my senior project because I have always been in the player's shoes but have always wondered what it was like from the coaching perspective. My curiosity of seeing if I could produce successful results in a kid was overbearing and senior project was the perfect opportunity to test this curiosity out.
My senior project topic was to weight train and baseball train a kid who had no previous experience with the sport and to take down multiple aspects of data to see if I could help him develop successful results and improve his skills in the sport. I researched proper coaching techniques to bond with the kid to make sure he gave me his best efforts, the most crucial body parts for a baseball player, a workout routine that was consistent in working on these body parts, supplements that would help him gain strength & endurance, and baseball drills for every part of the game of baseball. During this research process, I learned that baseball and weightlifting were a lot more complex than I anticipated. However I was very more informed on what I was doing and it gave me plenty of ideas and strategies on how to tackle the project as a whole. After the research I performed, I felt a lot more confident going into the project.
When I first began the project, I took down baseline information of my athlete to get his original stats prior to the training. After all of the training and drills, I took post stats of the same exact things I did at the beginning. My product was his overall improvement in lifting and the game of baseball by having his pre training numbers side by side to his post training numbers. My product relates to my research by showing me that the techniques, routines, and drills I learned from my research all were successful and were a crucial part in giving me a successful product. It may seem that the project went smoothly but that's not the case. I had one big obstacle to overcome and that was the fact that the athlete I selected had previously had a shoulder surgery on his torn labrum. I had to redo my whole workout routine that I had made to accommodate his injury. It definitely made me feel like I had wasted time but after I developed a new routine that he could fully participate in, the process went very smooth. I achieved success by seeing that I had helped him develop skills, strength, and endurance enough to actually see a difference in the end. This built up my confidence for my future goals.
My senior project topic can relate and connect to plentiful careers. These careers could be a sports coach, a personal trainer, a body builder, a sports announcer, a sports doctor, sports management or even sports medicine. During this project, I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to if I have full focus and full concentration on the task whether or not I've had experience with it or not. This topic and career path interests me a lot but this project gave me a perspective of pursuing this career that I had never had before. Would I pursue this career? For the most part, no, but if I decided to pursue it, it would only be to a certain extent with certain qualifications. For example, I would pursue the career if it was with an older and more mature group who was fully focused and had more experience because the younger kid was tougher to coach and somewhat stressful. However, the sports career is not in my plans as of now. I plan on attending The University of North Georgia for two years and then transferring to the University of Georgia and majoring in mechanical engineering.
My senior project taught me a lot about myself and gave me exposure to some of the things I didn’t know I was capable of. Overall, I enjoyed the senior project and am very grateful for the experience it gave me. It introduced a thought process that will help me decide my career path and also allowed me to develop quality skills that will help me on later in life. Thank you very much for your time!
