No More Deaths
This chapter was very telling of the circumstances lived at the border even though it is focused on the work of the good Samaritans that station themselves I the dessert to help the undocumented immigrants that cross the border. The work that they do is wonderful leaving the emergency kits for this people that walk through the dessert for days without food and water, it does save lives.
This group of different organizations that have decided to work together to help and save lives are doing a wonderful service, because like the book says not only are the lives of the immigrants in danger but also the wellbeing of those people that reside in the area being traveled. The environment itself needs protecting and this group of people do so by cleaning up the are picking up garbage and thing like that. It is very understandable that the ranchers and the rest of the populations from the area along the border that gets crossed feel frustrated and unhappy with the situation being lived, their land get trespassed and fences mangled, garbage is left behind and there is even a chance that they could at any point find the body of an illegal that died will trying to get across.
Now this is a situation that has gotten a lot worse in recent years with all the issues that are going on south of the border with the wars between drug cartel and sicarios that are lurking around in Mexico making it hard to live and pushing people to cross the border for fear of losing their lives. Over the years there has been changes in laws and this new wall that was started sometime in 2007. These immigrants that are looking for a better life find ways to get across this wall and many times risk their life trying to cross the dessert. Risking getting killed or left behind by the coyotes or getting caught by ICE. I believe that the job that No More Deaths is doing is a noble one trying to save lives by doing, and I would totally like to involve myself in. I would like to help save a life make an effort to extend my help to those who cross the border, but this does not mean that I condone their actions in crossing the border illegally. I try to understand their reasons for coming into this country the way they so. I also believe that it would be wonderful if more people were to get involved in projects like this. It cannot be easy to cross the border not knowing where you’re going or what you will encounter on the way. I must be scary to not know if you’re even going to make it across the desert or if you are going to get killed or kidnapped once you do get across.
