My name is Grier Gresham. This fall I will be attending Georgia Southern University and am currently planning to major in computer science. My ultimate goal in life is to be able to be self-sufficient, and to build my own tiny house once I have finished college. I saw my senior project as an opportunity to see the sorts of challenges I might face while building my own house. Because of this, I decided to build a small table, which I may end up using in the house itself.
For my research paper, I decided on researching the advancements made in carpentry. I was honestly surprised by how much computer technology had contributed to the advancement of this field. I learned that computer modeling software has enabled carpenters to precisely plan construction, as well as aiding in the design of the structure itself. In addition to this, carpenters have been able to streamline construction by the use of management software. This type of software has reduced costs within the industry by utilizing resources more efficiently. Lastly, I learned about the advancements in wood treating, that have led to wood being able to avoid damages to the wood caused by the environment over time.
My product is a moderately sized wooden table with a dark brown color. This table relates to my research paper because it represents a small scale carpentry project. My main obstacle throughout the entirety of building my project was getting wooden cuts to be the exact dimension as needed. In many cases I either cut too little or cut too much; either way, I wasted a lot of wood because of these types of mistakes. At some points throughout my project, I became very frustrated with the amount of these mistakes I was making. As I moved on, I began to have much less errors. I learned a lot from my mistakes, and now I feel much more comfortable with working with wood.
My research topic most closely resembles the field of carpentry. The main connection between the two is in regards to the design and production of wooden products. Using computer aided design, also known as CAD software, carpenters are able to design a product and have machines produce it with extreme precision. Throughout all of this, I found that I do not see myself pursuing a career in carpentry. Besides that, I would like to have the skills matched to those of a carpenter's. The reason for this is that I'd like to be able to maintain my household without the need of any others.
Overall, I'm happy with my having to go through my senior project. I feel that it has given me realistic expectations for what I'd have to deal with when I build my tiny house. Lastly, I'd like to thank the judges for the time they have given up to see my project.
