Hello Families, First off, we would like to say thank you to any of you who have served in our Armed Forces. Between the Presidential Election and the celebration of Veteran's Day, we were able to have conversa- tions in about how blessed we are to live in a country where we have freedoms, such as voting for our leaders or going to a school where we can worship God, because of people in the past and present who have served our country in the mili- tary. The students spent the week learning what a presidential election is, and then they participat- ed in their own election, in which they voted on characters from the book Duck for President to be president. It was fun to see the students get excited about voting, and then, as we counted the votes, show respect to their classmates when their candidate won or lost. Each day the stu- dents are learning how to be respectful, helpful, and responsible citizens of their classroom, com- munity, and country. In Bible Study this week we will be reading the story of Da- vid and Goliath. We will learn how David was able to defeat Goliath, a giant in the Philistine army, not because of his own strength but because he trusted in the name of the Lord. As believers, we also have God's power and protection in every difficulty we may face. In Math we will begin working on adding 3 numbers together (a+b+c=d). The students will learn strategies, such as using the commu- tative property to make 10, to help them solve 3 number addition prob- lems. Continue to work on addition and subtrac- tion facts within 20. In ELA we are beginning a Poetry Unit. The students will listen to and read a variety of poems and study how the poems suggest feelings and appeal to the five senses. They will also listen for rhythm and rhyme in the poems they study. The poems we read will relate to our social studies topic in order to enhance their understanding of Thanksgiving. In Social Studies we will learn about the Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving. We will focus on the relation- ship between the Native Americans and Pilgrims. Our goal is for the stu- dents to see how the two groups worked to- gether and the Pilgrims were able to have a suc- cessful harvest thanks to the help of the Na- tives. To celebrate the first thanksgiving, the students will plan and enjoy a special Manners Meal on Wednesday, No- vember 23rd. In Science the students will by learning about healthy eating in order to prepare for their Manners Meal. They will learn about the 5 food groups through choosemy- plate.gov/kids. We en- courage you to help your child track their eating by sorting the foods they eat for dinner into the 5 food groups.
