VENUE SPEED RUGBY CLUB
AIM: TO PUSH NORWEGIAN SEVEN’S PLAYER’S TO THE LIMIT BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY
GOALS: 1) IMPROVE PASSING
2) IMPROVE COMMUNICATION
3) DEVELOP DEFENCE AND ATTACK
This was the second season, in which I was involved with the National Seven’s Rugby Team as Head Coach. I spent the first season trying to develop a Seven’s game plan, so I did not place as much emphasis on individual skills. To clarify this, as Norway is a developing nation, the culture and understanding of rugby is still in its infancy. Although the results did not reflect the team’s potential in 2011, the basic foundations were laid for 2012, where I could concentrate on the individual. Copenhagen allowed me the dual opportunity of a training camp and tournament, where I could focus on the individual, culminating in focussing on the team.
DAY 1 APRIL 13TH
Team assembled 10:30am, half hour brief on the weekends activities and organisation.
Session 1 Passing Two Hours
I place a large emphasis on passing, typically in 15’s a pass generally ranges from 1 to 5 metres, but in Seven’s we are looking from close to 10-15 metres. I used a series of passing drills in this session. All drills start with the individual: example
Player A passes right and left in static position, always receiving the ball from C. As the drill develops , Player A is required to move from right to left and back at receiving the ball from C, the distance between X and B is increased to force A to pass more effectively under pressure. All drills culminate in having seven players involved. Example
I am also identifying the role of the play maker at an early stage player A.I progressed through the session with various drills increasing width and depth, till at the conclusion a basic attack plan was in place. At all times in this session, if a player did not receive a call from the receiving player when to pass, then the player with the ball did not pass. Communication was all times an underlying theme.
Session 2 Defence Two Hours
As above all sessions begin with the individual, so I conducted one on one tackling, increasing two against three, three against four and so on. To culminate in defence I placed two teams against each other: See Example

Players Z and 1 pass the ball between each other three times, on the third occasion player 1 commences the attack. Attacking teams aim to spread the ball, the defending team is trying to shut them down. Variations included having players A and B lying down till the attack commenced, this helped to simulate defending players caught in a ruck or out of position. I varied the number of defenders out of position, this helped and created greater pressure for players to communicate with each other.
Session 3 Game Situation Two Hours
I went through Kick-offs, scrums, line-outs, free-kicks and penalties. On completion of these exercises, players were assigned positions and roles within the team. To complete the session game situations were carried out. At all stages if moves, passes or calls were not made, then the play was repeated. This helped to create pressure both mentally and physical
