Knowing Reading ages – area for SEN team to develop;
Checking reading age of documents;
Chunk work – number sections – space things out.
Avoid asking them to read out loud – consider a TA to read key texts or have a reading buddy
Allow extra time for tasks which involve reading comprehension;
Try making each line a different colour – particularly in powerpoints - much easier to find your place when going back to incomprehensible text.
Avoid board work as far as possible or give print outs to support reading
Mark for content rather than presentation. When marking, praise for two correct spellings, target two incorrect spellings and use these errors as teaching points. Suggest a way of avoiding the mistake in future - for example, the similarity of the spelling to other known words, or ‘the tricky bit’ that has to be learned.
Can you take the time to help students understand the spelling?
