The Expectation and Reality of High School
By: Megan Oden
Throughout my research and developing my product I have learned that it is necessary to prepare students for their next steps in education. If students are not aware of what is ahead of them then how are they supposed to strive for success? Student awareness is very important.
Overview of Product
I constructed a ten question survey on the expectations and reality of high school.
The questions were basic questions about high school
First, I gave the survey to all of the eighth graders at Freedom Middle School.
Then, I gave the same survey to all of the ninth graders at Cherokee High School.
Once the data was collected ,I was shocked to see that most of the eighth graders were misinformed or unaware of the reality of high school.
There are more options out there for children with learning disabilities, to get the help that they need, than you think that they are.
Schools can offer support to students with learning disabilities by a 504 plan, IEP Programs in elementary and middle schools, peer mentors, and even special classes when a student is in middle and high school.
My paper goes hand in hand with my product because most people are unaware of the help that is out there. Furthermore showing that it is significant to keep students aware and prepared for their next steps in education.
Eight Graders Responses
Ninth Graders Reponses
In your opinion when is the best time to take an ACT or SAT (college entrance test)?
Most of the eight graders seem to either not know when to take it or they thought the best time to take it was senior year.
Respondent number 69 said, “The best time to take an ACT or SAT is after you finish high school.”
Most of the ninth graders thought the best time to take it was junior year or as soon as possible.
Respondent number 77 said, “As soon as possible, the sooner the better. Recommend taking it by the end of sophomore year for the first time without studying to see where you stand on it.”
Learning Stretch and Challenges
My learning stretch was finding the best way to give out my survey and making sure students are taking it seriously and not just clicking random answers.
Challenges I faced were getting the freshman to complete the survey for me. I didn’t have any problems with the eighth graders completing it.
Jennifer Miller (eighth grade teacher at Freedom Middle School)- She has been teaching for twenty six years and has taught middle schoolers for eighteen years. She has a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood, a Master’s in middle grades Language Arts/Social Studies, a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Specialist’s in Instructional Leadership.
My main accomplishment was providing the eighth graders with the correct answers and tips to survive/ succeed in high school, and seeing their faces light up. You could sense a sign of relief because I talked to them about how great high school is and that its not as scary as it seems.
What I learned about the experience
I learned that it is important to manage your time wisely, so you do not have to stress about getting things done the night before the due dates.
I learned that it was not as scary as I thought, to present to a class of students that I had never met before.
Would a pursue the job of becoming a teacher one day?
The answer is YES.
I have always loved teaching other, and actually getting up in front of a class and teaching them about high school was such an amazing experience.
I plan on going to Kennesaw State university and studying education and someday becoming a teacher of my own.
I will make sure to keep my students aware and prepared for their next steps in education.
Thank you so much for you time, and if you have any questions feel free to ask.
