My name is Matthew Norman, I am a senior at Cherokee High School, and I have been interested in electronics and computing since I was a child. My father has been a significant impact in my life by introducing me to computers because of his profession with maintaining company server systems. He led me to being tech-savvy from a young age, and has fueled my interest in technology all of my life. This is why I have chosen to complete my Senior Project on how a computer is built and how its components function together to form a working machine. My mission for my Senior Project is to attain a better understanding about how technology, that has molded my life, interacts with the rest of the world.
My Senior Project Research Paper focused on the ways that technology has improved the quality of life for people all around the world. It discussed the different ways that all technology, not just computers, has made life significantly easier and better than it was before. Without the invention of certain technology, aspects of life would be a burden or even impossible to accomplish. The evolution of technology followed the evolution of the world extremely closely; when certain technological advances were made the general quality of life improved with it. I had known that technology has changed swiftly before starting my paper, but after researching my topic I learned how much has changed in the world in the course of a life span of a generation.
My Senior Project is to deconstruct and rebuild a computer. A computer, specifically, is considered modern technology, similar to how around one hundred years ago airplanes were new inventions. If a person were to consider what technology is, they would certainly think about futuristic machines or inventions. My product represents both the development of old inventions, and the new advances made annually. While creating my product there were obstacles that needed to be addressed for its success. The parts of a computer are expensive, some costing upwards of one hundred dollars for a single piece, so I had to be absolutely certain that the parts were all in the correct place before even attempting to turn on the computer. Building a computer is frightening the first handful of attempts seeing if it will start perfectly, or at all. After finishing my product, I am confident that I will be able to detect problems with future computer complications and will be able to find a reasonable solution to it.
Finding solutions to computer trouble is important for almost all technology career paths. My father works in server management and maintenance, so if a disaster occurs he is the person responsible for turning the company network online. I found this job to be interesting, but exclusively repairing computers does not fit with my personal interests. I found building a computer is an interesting experience, but not one that I would enjoy to form my life around. If I were to pursue a career in the technology field, I would choose a job involving the application of computer hardware. A career where I am not the IT person coming to fix the printer daily, but a researcher in the technological area. I would appreciate being able to better the advancement of society through technology.
I am grateful that I was able to participate in a program designed to refine my interests in life, and how I can accomplish my goals to better my future. A computer is a wonderful invention of the modern age, and I would be disheartened were it to exist in a lower quality than it is now. I would like to thank the judges for taking the time to read this letter explaining my Senior Project, and for the time they are taking to review my product with me.
