The Poly Safe House
By Maddy and Elise
The beginning structure of the Poly Safe House looks like a Roly Poly on its side and the antennas help sense danger from as far as 5 miles away. Once it detects the danger, you go into a special room in the middle of the safe house and press a button. This activates the safe house and it starts to curl into a ball like a Roly Poly does when scared. This makes the house more protected from any danger. Our safe house is based off of a Roly Poly/Pill bug and more specifically, their exoskeleton. The shell of a Pill bug has a lot of layering and they overlap on the edge which is why it could flex and roll up into a ball. When they walk, they are naturally curved which helps them be prepared to hid and protect themselves. They have 7 pairs of legs (14 legs) and are not qualified as an insect because insects have 6 legs. Instead, Roly Poly's are related to shrimp and crayfish so they breathe through gills. If there is a toxic gas outside of the safe house, the gills help filter the air so that it is safe to breathe.
The reason that we chose to base our safe house off of a Pill Bug is because they have a strong exoskeleton that helps protect them from danger just like a safe house. The curved shape means that it is always prepared and can roll up into a ball quickly. Also, the shell of a Roly Poly is a greyish brown and this helps them camouflage so they aren't as visible to predators. The point of the Poly Safe House is to protect you from natural disasters and any other threats and Pill Bug's exoskeleton helps them guard themselves from danger.
