As a senior at Cherokee High School, my life as a high school student is coming to a close. I will be attending Georgia Institute of Technology next semester studying Business Administration. But before all this can happen, I must complete a senior project in order to graduate high school. We are told to pick a subject that interests us, something we possibly want to do as a career, so I chose City Planning. For my product, I created a recruitment packet to send to Trader Joe’s. By doing this, I was able to see the process a city goes through to lure a business to locate in their city.
Before I started my product, I wrote a research paper that answered the question “How does city planning affect the economic growth of a city/town?” I wanted to know why Downtown Canton, GA is behind other cities in their development process, for example Downtown Woodstock, GA. While researching, I ran into many problems such as biased articles, many answers to my question, and many ways one can go about city planning. After extensive research, I found that economic growth all comes down to a master plan and a thoroughly executed recruitment process. It is the little things that start a city such as One-way roads vs Two-way roads, landscaping, and the different uses of land. In the end, everything is driven by the businesses that are located in the city and what the community demands.
My product, the recruitment packet, shines a specific location in Canton in this magical light, making Trader Joe’s want to be located in Canton. Bringing businesses to Canton is part of the city planning process. Like my research paper explains, when a city is well designed, a business wants to be located there. This causes a chain reaction and the economy starts to grow. The location I selected at first look is not ideal for a Trader Joe’s, but with the right information and data to back up my argument, it looks like the perfect place. It was difficult to build the packet because going into the project I had little knowledge of the process. After meeting my facilitator multiple times, I began to learn what exactly goes into a recruitment packet and how to develop one.
When I started my senior project in August, I was also applying to colleges. I was interested in city planning, but in the end I chose to major in Business. This project helped me realize that my true interest was the other side of the process, the private development side. I found city planning interesting and the knowledge I obtained will help me in my future career. My goal is to start my own company one day, and city planning is going to affect where I choose to locate my office. This project gave me an inside look of what the process is in starting a business in a specific location, and how the city design effects how my business could grow.
I loved every minute I spent on this project. My respect for City Planners and Economic Developers grew immensely, and I hope yours does as well after you see my product. Thank you for taking the time to judge my project.
