The Desperate is about a young man trying to survive in a town where the government was overthrown. Find out what happens to Caige!
Short Story: By Gabby Brown
Caige was walking down an alley to his home. It's never a good idea to take the alley if you had no weapon, but Caige carried a long sharp knife in his pocket to defend himself. Caige stepped over a man who was barely alive, must have been in a fight. Caige kept walking, pretending not to notice the dying man, it was usual for Caige to see dead people in the alley. Ever since the government got overthrown by the terrorists, the street became dangerous and all of the stores were closed and all of their products were stolen from thieves, like Caige. Caige finally stopped walking when he got to a small bridge, he climbed under the bridge were a tent was set up. Caige went inside the tent where a woman and a young boy were laying on pieces of cardboard.
"I found some food." Caige said and unloaded his bag that he was carrying that had scraps of variety of foods.
"Thank you so much honey." The woman said kissing her son on the cheek.
The young boy coughed very loudly and looked very pale.
"He's getting worse" Caige said to his mother.
"No, Kerry will get better, he just needs more rest." The woman said trying to reassure herself.
"You need some more rest too Mom." Caige said gently.
"No I don't, I just woke up from a n-" The mother coughed very harshly for several minutes while Caige tried to help her. "Nap." The woman said weakly after she stopped coughing.
"Just get some rest Mom." Caige said and was prepared to go outside again to watch for anyone near their home.
"Caige," The mom said gently, Caige looked back at her, "You are such a brave man, just like your father, you have found this amazing tent and food for us, I am proud of you and love you."
Caige looked down at the mention of his father, who had been murdered three years ago and when his mom said he "found" the tent and the food when really he stole all of it.
"I love you too Mom." Caige replied quietly.
Caige went outside, tears started rolling down his face. He knew that his little brother and his mom wouldn't get better, they will get worse, and die. Just like everyone else who gets the virus.
Caige started walking to the playground, where no one goes to because there are only a couple of kids who even are alive now, and if there are any alive, they stay in hiding. Caige sat down on a swing and thought about his mom and his brother and where to search for food tomorrow. After a while he got up, then suddenly, he started coughing.
