In 2014, researchers at the University of Southern California found that subjects exposed to images of social networking sites, experienced brain activity similar to that seen in people with addictions to gambling or drugs. Is social media usage harmful? The article “Social Media” by Nick Cooley explains that social media impacts us negatively and positively. Cooley points out that supporters of social media want to promote political and social causes on social media because it helps raise political awareness and creates methods of communication. The author also discusses the fact that opponents of social media causes an obsession and dumbs down our communication. Similarly, it is my belief that social media has negatively impacted society because it now controls our everyday life choices.
First, by using social media it causes in obsession. What is meant by this is that using social media become an obsession because it becomes similar to a drug. It starts to control the person. When teens get in a car now their first thing isn’t to put their seat belt on it’s to plug in their phone and turn on their music. Once their driving and they receive a text they feel obligated to unlock their phone and look at the message. That’s why so many teens are crashing and dying because they feel the need to be on their phones 24/7 if not they feel as if they are missing out on what’s happening with the world.
Second, dumbs down our communication. Because we have social media at our fingers tips it’s hard to not want things done faster and at the blink of an eye. It dumbs down our communication because it corrects words for us and we can spell words out how ever we want them to. When I first got my cellphone I didn’t care about the phone itself I cared about it having the capability to down load apps I felt I needed to have. And when I would see my friends talking a certain way on social media I started to pick up on their words. I started forgetting how to spell words in class because my phone was the thing that corrected me automatically changing my word to the correct word and even form.
And finally, it causes low self-esteem because kids want to be just like someone else, they look up to everyone else. If they don’t they feel as if they are poor and don’t like it .
