The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The Minister of Energy, Anatoly Mayorets.
“The odds of a meltdown are one in 10,000 years. The plants have safe and reliable controls that are protected from any breakdown with three safety systems.”
What happened ?
Friday 25, April 1986
The test begins. Workers at the plant were performing tests on the system. They shut off the emergency safety systems and the cooling system, against established regulations, in preparation for the tests.
01:00 – The reactor was running at full power with normal operation. The purpose of the test was to observe the dynamics of the RBMK reactor with limited power flow.
Emergency core cooling system switched off.
At 1:23 a.m. on April 26,
when extremely hot nuclear fuel rods were lowered into cooling water, an immense amount of steam was created, which because of the RBMK reactors' design flaws, created more reactivity in the nuclear core of reactor number 4
The resultant power surge caused an immense explosion that detaches the 1,000-ton plate covering the reactor core, A few seconds later, a second explosion of even greater power than the first blew the reactor building apart.
Twenty-eight highly exposed reactor staff and emergency workers died from radiation
Officials believe the accident also was responsible for nearly 7,000 cases of thyroid cancer among individuals who were under 18 years of age at the time of the accident.
Myth The genetic consequences of the Chernobyol accident are horrific.
