My name is Landon Stradley, an 18 year old high school student who is currently working with the Atlanta Braves as they are currently relocating their stadium. This opportunity came upon me by my neighbor who is the Vice President of Operations for the Braves. I thought, since I was already going to KSU for engineering, why not get some experience while I am given the chance. I hope to graduate from KSU in about five years and continue my work with the Braves. I love the project I have chosen and thank God for the opportunities bestowed upon me.
When I began working on my senior project I got a “behind the scenes” look at what the life of an engineer was like. Seeing all of this new technology prompted me to think about how our ancestors lived without the technology we have now. I started researching “Engineering through the ages” and was shocked at what I found. I found that a lot of simple machines that we use today (pulley, lever, wedge, etc.) were still around in ancient times. This got me thinking about how little we appreciate these machines. So in my research paper I wrote about the different fields of engineering and the tools they use connecting the simpler style of tool used in the ancient times.
After researching these tools, I had the confidence I needed to understand their make-up, therefore knowing how they function. During my job I experienced many obstacles besides working during one of the hottest summers Atlanta has seen in 20 years. I was put off on my own without help and was given a list of things that needed to be done by a certain time. Pressure attacked and the fear of letting down 20,000 fans fell on me. As we got through the season and closed the doors to Turner Field and moved on to the finishing of SunTrust Park, I decided to make a small commercial showing off everything we have done and introduce the new park to the world. I also will have my uniform on display so that you (the judges) can see what the engineers wear on a daily basis.
My topic and research paper directly relate to my interests in becoming an engineer. I have always had an interest in the technology and advancements in society and wanted to do my part in making America the country it deserves to be. My interest in engineering has taught me to stay calm in the crisis of technological failure and has inspired me to never quit even when you’re short of what is necessary. I will be attending the KSU Marietta campus (Southern Poly Tech) in pursuit of a 4-year degree in Mechatronics.
Overall, I have enjoyed working with the men and women in the engineering field, but have not enjoyed the papers etc. This experience has given me helpful tips that I will use for the rest of my life, as well as skills to use in and out of the workforce. I have met some fantastic people along the way as well and know that my relationship with them will help me get up on my feet after college. I can’t thank the engineering team with the Braves enough for taking me under their wing, nor can I thank you enough for taking the time in reading this letter. I hope you all have a blessed day and I can’t wait to meet you and bring you along the journey that is SunTrust Park!
