Hello, my name is Kyle Lewis. I plan to attend Auburn University in the fall and major In Business. For my senior project, I did coaching a U11 lacrosse team during the fall. I chose this topic because I play on the varsity lacrosse team here at Etowah, and I love the game. My goal was to inspire the youth of Towne Lake to continue the tradition of Etowah lacrosse and to hopefully lead some of these kids on the same path as me.
For my research paper, I studied how coaching is a lot more than just teaching the game. I found that coaching can not only affect how the players perform on the field, but also how they perform in life. Also, I found that being a coach is a whole lot different from being a player. As a player, you may or may not be looked to to be a leader, and there are always other players on the team to fill that role. As a coach, you don't have the luxury of someone else being a leader, so it prepares you for life in a sense that you have to grow up even when you don't think you're ready.
For my product, I will be handing out stat sheets for the players on the year, and I will be wearing my coaching shirt I was given at the start of the season. This will show how the team has improved on the year. Some obstacles in the way were time management, learning how to talk to younger kids, and the weather. Practice would sometimes be right after my practice, so I was already tired and I had to push through it for the team. Learning how to talk to the younger kids was difficult because of how I was coached. Leaving my practice, where I've been yelled at and being told what to do and being expected to be perfect on the first try, and coming to the U11 practice, where you had to realize the age and how inexperienced some of the players were, it was a challenge to switch gears. Also, the weather was a challenge because we had to cancel or move practice a couple times due to thunderstorms.
Coaching has helped me realize a lot of things about myself. It has helped me become more of a leader for my personal team because I was forced into a leadership position as a coach. I also realized that for a career, I wouldn't want to coach, but I would definitely do this as a pastime or for my kids when I have them. It also showed me how influential elders can be on younger kids, especially high schoolers on 10 year olds. They look up to you and you are a hero to them, so you should always act that way.
My thoughts on senior projects are that they are a lot of work. I didn't like having to make logs and keeping track of everything I had to do was not fun. But I did like the memories I made with my team, so all in all I think it is helpful.
