Unit 2 – Metals : Structure and Uses
Within this unit you will be looking at various project to develop a concept about metals, their unique properties, and their chemical structures. Each phase of these projects has a deadline of the day we return from break.
You are to pick one of the tasks that are presented below and include a bibliography page for any written sources use in your background information
Design of a coin - You will need to need to develop a historical perspective for the purpose to coin. How far back in history do we first see the use of coins? When did the U.S. first use coins as a monetary source? What value was given to the coin at the beginning? How did they arrive at the types of metal for coins ( copper, tin, iron, etc.). Name some special coins that were developed in U.S. history and what reasons were given to for their development? What is the present market value of the following metals that are used in coins – copper, zinc, gold. If most coins weigh around 3 grams, what is their worth for the previous metals mentioned? Give a synopsis on which of the metals would be appropriate for its use in a penny, nickel, dime, and a dollar. Provide at least 2 full pages of background information ( doubled spaced).
Battery design - what is the purpose of the battery and who was the first to develop a wet cell/dry cell. How does the concept of oxidation-reduction reactions fit into this design. What materials are typically found in most dry cells? How does this material differ between a “regular” dry cell and a rechargeable dry cell? What chemically allows a rechargeable to be used over and over. Provide at least a page of information for this part.
Perform a test of three batteries and determine which last the longest. Use a common device ( flashlight, electronic toy, etc.) and record data. Make a synopsis of what your data shows and submit the data with this part of the assignment. Due a week after the first assignment from above. Written background needs to be at least 2 pages, double spaced.
Jewelry design – Name 5 precious metals. Determine what their present market value is for the day’s date( price/gram). Name three properties that make these metals unique for jewelry and how they apply. What is the rating system that make these metals of a higher or lower value amongst one another. What techniques are used to give these metals their unique designs.
Survey 3 stores and determine the value of a piece of metal jewelry ( 14k wedding band). Which store has the best deal? What are some of the feature that makes it more or less attractive to buy? Due on the third week that this assignment is given out.
This should complete the requirements that are necessary for her lab work for Unit 2. Please make sure to meet the deadlines. If you wish to do these in a different order, let me know ahead of time.
