All my life America has been my home….till the world collided and stuck together like it did sixty-five million years ago. Mom and dad fight over if we should move to the edge far away from the others. The world was segregated into seven villages. We are village number one, the red section. There is a section green, blue, orange, brown, yellow, and white. Then there is the capital, section black. The capital takes control of all of us. Forcing the laws and keeping us in line.
The world seems threatening since the world has collided. Now I can walk over to section brown with no problem. The world has begun to become more violent, self defensive. We have to fight to stay alive. We have to do what it takes to be safe and feed our family. The world is falling by the minuet and no one can really see it. Less people live on the streets now. They walked over to village two or village five and leave America behind. God wants us here….that’s what my father advises my family.
My family and I sit at the table taciturn, listening to my little sister Mia hum a song under her breath. My older brother beck clanks his fork on the side of his plate not even bothering to eat. Father was out all morning finding the game. We were all born knowing how to shoot an arrow. We were prepared for the world to come to this. Mother looks at me and looks to beck. Every morning we set out to find food…..even money.
My father clears this throat and looks across the table at mother.
“Children.” He says all though he is only talking to beck and I. “the capital is coming to town square, you better get ready” he picks up his plate and leaves us with that saying.
Mother fallows him looking back at us before she opens the kitchen door. I look to beck he looks horrified…..angry. He drops his fork and charges off to our room. I look to my little sister she shrugs and finishes eating her deer.
I fallow beck out of the room with my jeans, red tang top, and cow boy boots on while my brother wears his red suit. Mother was in her red dress and father had his red robe while Mia had a red top and a red leggings. Every time the capital comes it is customary for us to wear the colors of our village. The capital wears long black robs with hoods that black out there face.
We walk down the street to town square as many others come out of their homes with the fine red clothing on. Mia hangs on to my mother’s hand as I walk close to beck wishing that he was in a better mood. I look to him he looks to me he knows how I feel he sighs and I feel his fingers wrap around my hand.
We reach town square and crowd around the center stage where plays are usually preformed. The men in black robes stand watching us all come in. My mother holds Mia close to her. Beck holds me close to him.
There is a tall man that walks up to the podium on the center of the stage. I can’t see his face and his body is covered by black fabric. He starts to talk.
“People of village one” everyone starts to cheer. His voice is deep and sounds old. I Look to my brother his eyes are cold. “This announcement is about the capital prince”
“The prince?” I say. When did we have a prince? Of course we had a king but that is all I have ever known about.
My brother looks to me and puts a figure to his lips. We both look back to the invisible man.
“My son has just turned six-teen” this man must be the king. “Now he must marry and from each village I will be choosing a young girl from a lucky family to travel to the capital with the other six village girls to compete for my son, Eric”
As the king said young girl my nails gripped onto my brother’s hand. My brother let out an “ow” and I loosened up. I didn’t want the king to continue talking. I didn’t want to hear what he had to say. I look around at my family. Tears rolled down my mother’s face. My father looked as if he was punched in the gut, but that is what every one of us was feeling. One of the families where going to lose a daughter…..one way or another.
I felt my heart racing and I looked to my mother. She was staring at me. Her eyes were filed with same. And finally she mouthed “I’m sorry” to me before the king started to explain why she was sorry.
I took a deep breath and swallowed the pain as the words finally reached me.
“Every one of your parents has signed you up deepening on your age” he booms. “If you are thirteen you where signed up five times” I let out a small cry and my brother holds on to me. “If you are fourteen you where signed up seven times, if you are fifteen you where signed up ten times.”
I could not hold back the fear inside me anymore. This was the real deal one of us was leaving…..and it might be me. I am thirteen years old. I am a young American girl. Why would the prince want me? Please god don’t let them call me. The mothers and young girls around me looked scared, angry. This has never happened before. How could my mother not tell me I was signed up to marry a man I have never even known about?
Another man in black comes onto the stage and I can only see the beautiful eyes that reflected the sun light hidden under the wonders of the black robe. I don’t pay attention to what the king says I try to disbelieve it. The man standing in front of me…..was the prince. The beautiful eyed man is the prince…..Prince Eric.
His tan hand reaches for his hood and he tightly grips onto it. The hood falls to his shoulders to reveal his beautiful face. His spiky black hair looks like the night sky. His hazel eyes are as bright as the sun. His face looks as smooth as the earth……he was so handsome. I feel as if he is looking right through my soul like he never wanted to do this. He does not want to marry……he does not want to choose one of us.
He looks off the stage and I fallow his eyes. A large spinning wheel comes out in to sight.
He spins it once then twice when three times……then he stops. My heart is racing my grip on my brother is harder than ever. He reaches in and pulls out a red card. I close my eyes. My brother holds me tight. I can hear the name boom around the walls of my brother’s body…….why?
Tears roll down my face as I let go of my brother and try to take in the name they just called……
“Amelia Run” the prince calls again. I take a deep breath and walk to the stage. My blond braided hair falls on my back as I slowly walk to0 what I think is hell.
I feel my eyes sting but I don’t let anymore tears fall down my cheeks. This is what god wants I won’t fight it. I walk up the stage stairs not looking around at the people starring at me.
“That’s me” I whisper. I look up the beautiful prince is staring at me. My heart skips a beat. He looks away and sighs. The king walks to me. He takes off his black hood.
His hair is white but he looks young in his early forty’s. He smiles at me and puts out his hand in greetings. I take it and try to smile but my body won’t let me. He looks me in the eyes. My body feels like pins and needles. I take a deep breath as he looks back to the crowed. I can feel the eyes of the prince on me…..why me?
The crowed starts to cheer but I could not understand what the king had said. I was too caught up in my thoughts. The king and the prince lead me off stage. I do not look at them but only look at the floor. I don’t want to be here but I need to win to help my family. I want to win for the money not for love….how could I ever love the prince.
The king whispers something to the prince that I can’t hear then leaves me and the prince to our selves.
“Amelia” He says in his perfect voice. I look up his hazel eyes connected with my baby blue ones. “I am sorry” he sighs “This was my father I don’t want to me the cruel king my father is raising me to be. I won’t hurt you”
I look away and take a deep breath “I don’t want to be hear….when will I get to say good bye to my family?” I ask in a ruthless voice. I look back to him. He looks ashamed.
“You” he stops I shake my head no “You won’t”
Tears fall down my face. He comes closer. “Get away I don’t even know you” I say.
“Amelia please, just corporate this will only get worse if you don’t. I only want to help you” he says in a calm voice.
“Then leave me alone I am only here because my family is struggling to eat. I would never want to marry you” I say and walk off in the other direction.
I turn around a tear rolls down his face he looks mad. He hates this as much as I do.
Her words of pain traveled right into my heart like a knife. How could my father do this to me? She was so young but so beautiful. Her silky blond hair and her bright beautiful blue eyes drove me crazy. She was so perfect. I didn’t want to marry. How could I choose a soul mate in only a month and a half? How could I show all seven girls I was only a friend that none of this was my plain? I already knew she hated me. What would the other girls think?
All I knew was her name. I wanted to know more about her. How old was she. Where was she from…..I felt bad she could not say good bye to her parents. I ran off in the way she went. I saw her sitting head in hands on a bench. The wind blew her hair just right.
I could not talk I could only stair at her. I took a deep breath and finally said her name. “Amelia” she looked at me her eyes sparkling from tears. She looked as if she wanted to rip my head off…..I could not blame her.
“What do you want?” she asked looking away.
“You are allowed to take a necklace to the capital with you” I stop and sigh “You might need it.” She looks at me with pain. That was such a stupid thing to say.
“I thought I was not allowed to say good bye to my parents” she says
I nodded “I will be getting it for you”
She sighs and stands up. “Very well my parents will know which one I want” she stops “Do you need to know their names?” she asks I nod again. “My mother is Wendy Run my father is Andrew Run” I nod and walk to her.
She backs away I sign and look to the grass beneath us. I take her hand my hands shaking. She does not try to pull away. I look to her she is staring at me with kind eyes. I pull her hand to my lips and I kiss it gently.
“I am sorry, Amelia” I whisper. She nods and pulls her hand away and walks with me back to the stage.
She looks out to the crowed and a tear rolls down her face. “Tell my parents I love them” she says with sorrow. I nod and walk through the crowed to find Amelia’s parents.
The crowed bows and gasp as I make my way to the back where Amelia told me she had been. I spot a young woman crying and a young man holding her tight in his arms. I walk to them a small little girl spots me and gasps. The man and woman look to me.
“Are you Wendy and Andrew?” I ask with hesitance. They nod and the mother whips her face.
She nods and smiles “Hello prince” I bow.
“Amelia is required to take a necklace with her to the capital do you have one?” I ask the mother nods and digs through her pockets. The father does not look to me once. Another young man is holding the little girl. It must be her brother and sister.
“Give her this” the mother says. She places the cold metal in my hands. I nod.
“Your daughter will be safe I promise” the mother smiles and kisses my cheek.
“Thank you” she says.
I look to her father and nod. “Your daughter gives you her love” I say He sighs and looks away.
The brother looks angry. I soon walk away back onto the stage. Amelia waits with wide eyes as she sees me arrive. I open my hand to show her the necklace her mother gave me. It was a small silver guitar with tiny beautiful designs on it. She takes it from me. She turns it in her hands.
“Do you want me to put it on for you?” I ask. She nods and hands it back to me. I go behind her and place it around her petite neck. I hook the clamp and the cold metal falls onto her chest.
She turns around and takes a deep breath “Thank you” she says and kisses my cheek. I smile. She does not smile back.
I clear my throat and look her in the eyes.
“Are you ready for this?” I ask she nods.
I scrambled through my room trying to find something to wear for the capitals arrival I need to find something green. My feet hit the hard wood floor as I run down the hall to Bella’s room. I crashed through the door. Bella sits at her desk brushing her hair. She turns around knowing I was going to ask for something.
“Do you have anything green?” I ask she sighs.
“Come on Elizabeth we are section green all your cloths should be green!” she yells getting up going to her closet.
“Well you’re the one to talk” I whisper she growls at me. I smile.
“Please” I ask with a whimper. She groans and goes through her cloths.
She takes out a beautiful white and green one strapped dress. She goes to another drawer and takes out a brown belt. I smile as she lays it on the bed. She sighs and gets a sparkly green shirt and a pair of skinny jeans out for herself. She picks up the dress and belt and holds it out to me.
“Here take it” she says I smile.
“Thanks!” I yell grabbing it out of her hands and running out the door.
“You're welcome!” she calls after me.
I run into my room and close my door. I strip down from my regular clothes. I through on the dress and put on the belt, I tie back my hair into a pony tail and run to go put on my shoes. I take out a pair of silver sandals and run back down the hall way into the living room. Mother and father where already sitting on the couch when I arrived. My five year old sister was sitting on my father’s lap. Her curly brown hair fell to her shoulders and she was wearing a long green sun dress with a pink rose in her hair.
I smile “Second one done” I say proudly and walk to my mother. She laughs and sighs.
“Oh Elizabeth” She says as I sit next to her. “Only if your sisters where as fast as you” she says I nod. “Can you tell them they have one minute deer?” she asks tucking my hair behind my ears. I get up.
“Sure” I say and cuff my hands around my mouth and yell. “Bella! Rhea! One minute!” I smile and look to mother “Done” my father chuckles.
“Oh my, my who raised you?” my father jokes. I smile.
“Very funny” I say
Bella walks out in her sparkly green tang top and skinny jeans looking even better than it did on the bed. Rhea fallows after her with a green tie die shirt and green shorts. Her hair is in two braids while Bella’s is curled and the bangs are pulled back. Bella is fifteen while Rhea is ten and I am fourteen. Almost as old as Bella.
We head out the door and walk down to the main hall where the capital will be speaking. On the way Bella meets up with her boy friend Alec. I roll my eyes as I see him approach and kiss when he reaches her side. My father shacks his head and looks sad when he sees them. I look to Rhea who is holding onto heathers hand she shacks her head and shrugs. I sigh and keep walking.
We reach main hall as everyone whispers in amazement. I try to listen more closely and finally I hear the word prince.
“The prince is here!” I yell Rhea troughs a hand over my mouth. My mother, father, sister, and Alec all look to me. I take off Rhea’s hand. I smile “Opps” I say.
My sister Bella looks to my father and mother horrified “Prince, why is here?” she asks. My mother tries to say something but a man starts to talk. We all look to him.
His face is covered by the shad of the black robe. “good morning village two” he says “As you hear prince Eric has joined me on this journey and this is for a special reason he is finally turned sixteen and is ready to marry”
“Marry!” me and my sister Bella yell in a hushed tone. We both look to mother and father but only their eyes say sorry.
“Now as you all know your parents have sighed you up depending on age if you are thirteen you where signed up five times. If you are fourteen you where signed up seven times if you are fifteen you where signed up ten times.”
My sister lets out a small cry. We look to our mother and father but they do not look back. Alec holds a strong arm around my sister’s waist. Rhea takes my hand in hers. I look to her and she smiles. Another man in a black robe comes of the stage pulling a large spinning wheel. The man reveals his self. I gasp and look to me sister she looks hypnotized. The man is beautiful…..that man is the prince. This midnight black hair blends in with the hood that rest on his shoulders. His hazel eyes bring out amazing colors that I never knew about.
His tan skin looks smooth and perfect. It is no darker than mine but no lighter than my little sisters. He looks to the wheel with a look of many thoughts. He spins the wheel over and over again and it gets fast and faster….then stops. I hold my breath and close my eyes praying that it won’t be Bella or me. The prince looks up and says the name.
“Bella Rosa!” I gasp and look to my sister. A growl comes up from Alec’s throat. My sister closes her eyes and takes a deep breath and slowly walks to her doom. I look to Alec and back to Bella who is almost to the stage. I look once more at Alec he looks heartbroken…I can’t let this happen. I grab my dress and run after Bella.
“No!” I yell “Don’t do it!” Bella turns around in a heartbeat and looks to me.
“Elizabeth don’t do this I can’t let you” she says.
I am out of breath “Bella you love Alec stay with him he needs you” I say
“Elizabeth” she sighs I step in front of her into the king and princes sight.
“I will proxy my sister at my heart’s will” I say.
“Elizabeth!” my sister yells.
I turn around and stair her right in the eyes.
“Bella, Rhea and Heather need you. Mother and father need you. Alec needs you. You know in your heart what is right” I say my sister sighs and a tear slides down her face.
“Then take this” she says unclamping a necklace from her neck.
It is a pink piece of a gem our uncle had found in Gandwana. The necklace sparkled as it hit the sun. She placed it around my neck and let the cool rock melt away all my fears. I smile. She kisses my cheek.
“Be safe” she says I smile and walk on to the stage next to the king.
The prince stairs at me not talking but looking. I don’t bother to stair back or tell him to stop this is me this is who I am this is what I choose to do.
Only if these girls know what they were getting there selves into...it makes me feel sick. The girl she was so brave so sweet so beautiful. I could not help but stair at her how could she do such a thing? I look off stage and see the great Amelia shaking her head at this girl. I could not quit get her name over the loud gasp and chit chat of the crowd. My father finally announces the replacement of the other girl Bella. Then we walk off the stage leaving the family to wonder why there little girl left.
Amelia walks off with the king to leave me and the new girl alone. She looks sad but proud….I examine her from head to toe and finally ask.
“What is your name?” she looks to me.
“Elizabeth” she says in such a beautiful voice.
I smile “That is a very lovely name” she blushes and looks away.
“Thank you” she stops “Eric is a very handsome name for a prince” I laugh.
The room goes silent for a moment and I want to talk to her more to hear.
“You’re very brave for doing that Elizabeth” She looks beck to me.
“It's what had to be done” she says taking hold of her necklace.
I look at her as her eyes fill with many thoughts. Is this going to happen every time I see a new girl? Will they all be beautiful……will they all make me feel as if I am in love. How do you discover true love in such a short amount of time? How do you know which one is right? How did my father do this? I look behind Elizabeth and see Amelia come out in her red jeans and blue and white tang-top.
She looks at Elizabeth and looks back to me. Elizabeth sees me looking behind her she turns around and she and Amelia meet eyes.
Amelia walks closer “Hello Elizabeth, I’m Amelia”
Elizabeth puts out her hand “Elizabeth” Amelia smiles.
I walked slowly on the beautiful Greek beach. I have been living in Greece since I was born. The sea covered winds blow back my long wavy light brown hair. The sand sinks in between my bare feet. I walk close enough to the sea that the waves roll over my feet. The water feels ice cold it sends shivers up my body. I reach the ship reach rocks and start to climb up them. As I pear over the top of them the ocean mist sprays my face. I take a seat and let the mist comfort me. I always come out here every day every night. It is what I call the thinking rocks.
The capital is coming with the prince…..Prince Eric. He will be choosing one girl to be his wife. All the girls from each district will be fighting to win over him…. to marry him. If I was called would I want to win or would I fight to lose. What if I did want to win what if I wanted to be called to be with the prince? I had two brothers and a sister but my sister was too old to get signed up I was sighed up seven times. Father keeps telling my mother we should not even bother to go that there is a one and a million chance I would be called but all he did was just jinks’ it.
My long blue dress covered up my olive skin colored legs. I did not bother to wear any shoes I never do. My brother Jason and sister Susan where coming for me along with my little brother Victor and our parents. My gold god neck lace rested on my chest I always wore this for good luck and I wanted my good luck for my name to be drawn out of the wheel. I looked out at the sea and hoped to see something amazing but the water was calm and clear…..to still. The wind blow my hair in front of my face but I don’t care I only lock my eyes on the ocean. I hear my name blow over the sky.
“Llithya!” it yells I look around and as I cross over the horizon I spot something……a boat?
I look close not just a boat it is the princes boat! I jump down from the rocks holding onto my dress so it does not fly up. I run down the beach at full speed and see two dots in the distance I get closer and see Susan and Jason. They see me and look mad.
“Llithya! Where were you!?” my brother Jason yells I keep running and take hold of Susan’s and Jason’s hand and pull them with me.
“Llithya slow down what are you doing?” Susan yells.
“The prince he is here!” I yell back at them they look to each other and we all run faster.
We reach the dock the prince will arrive at. The place is crowded and the rose and flowers that cover the entrance block everything. I take hold of Jason’s hand who takes hold of Susan’s hand and we jam through the crowed. I spot victor.
“Victor?” I say to myself then finally see my mother and father as well. “Mama! Papa!” I yell. I reach them.
My father hugs me and so does my mother they have just come back from America this morning. I can see the boat get closer and closer the sails on the boat look like big clouds but the ship its self is made of bright cherry oak wood. The boat finally docks I hold my breath as I see the men in black stand at the entrance. The whole town crowds full of blue that’s our district’s color. They all take off their hoods and walk down the ramp. A beautiful strong man stands in front of all of them. His eyes look like the colors of the forest and this skin is as dark as mine. Is hair is a midnight black that matches his robe.
They walk closer and closer to the part where I stand with my family. Blue flowers blow into this path. The most perfect flower lands in front to me. I look and see the prince coming and duck down to get the flower. Soon the sound of shoes stops right in front of me. I look up and right there is the prince our very own prince standing right in front of me. I stand up and bush off my dress. He bends down and picks up the flower in his perfect hands trying not to break it. He looks to me and tucks the blue flower stem behind me ear.
He smiles and takes his hand away. I can’t breathe I look right into his eyes. He bows and walks the rest of the way down the aisle. I touch the flower with my hand and look back where the prince had left me with his touch. I look to my sister she is staring at me with wide eyes. I look to Jason he laughs.
“You have got to be joking” he says shaking his head. “That’s the prince?” he asks
“What are you jealous?” Susan asks I laugh.
We all walk to the stage the prince will be picking the one girl. I look to the ground close my eyes and cross my fingers behind my back. Let me win let me get picked. The prince starts to talk his great handsome voice echoes our village.
“I have been to two villages so far. Each girl I have meet is special and has already made me feel like I have know them forever.” He stops “at the beginning of my journey I didn’t even want to choose one girl let alone marry but I want to please my father show him I was meant to be king!” he yells.
The whole village starts to cheer I look next to me as my mother she smiles at me and brushes a thumb over my cheek. I smile back does she think it will be me. He spins the wheel and takes out a blue card mother told me she hand only but our last name on the cards. The sun shines right through the card and I can make out the letters. P-e-t-e-r-a…….my last name. I start to walk up there even before he says my name. My father grabs my arm.
“Where are going?” he ask
“It is me papa” he looks to the rest of my family.
“The Petera family” the prince calls. My father’s arm drops to his side.
My mother runs and grabs me in her arms “Be safe baby girl” she says as she lets go.
Next my brother and sister hug me all at once. I look up and smile at them.
“We love you kid” says Jason.
“You are so lucky” Susan whispers in my ear I laugh.
I walk over to my little brother he looks sad. I kiss the top of his head he smiles and looks up at me.
“See ya bud” I say he smiles.
I walk slowly up to the stage the prince looks shocked that it is really me he called. He holds his lock on my eyes as I walk to his side I smile and take the blue flower out of my hair.
“It is Llithya Petera” I say.
He smiles and laughs still staring at me. The king walks to us and smiles at us starring at each other. He laughs and says something to the crowed to cause them to cheer. I look away from the prince and look to the crowed and smile. The wind blows my hair behind my head and I feel as if I am flying. The prince and I walk of the stage to talk.
~ 18 ~ look to each other and we all run faster.
“I have been to two villages
