I have a strong variety of interests and am constantly challenging myself to new experiences, which is important for a healthy mind. I commenced my training in the National University of Ireland Galway where I studied an Arts degree consisting of three years of Geography and Psychology. My subject choices were a mixture of my own interest and also a need to study outside of my comfort zone and to gain new insights into a broad spectrum of other disciplines. I feel that I have gained a considerable insight into teaching and children with the help of my degree subjects. Studying geography at third level bettered my understanding of the subject overall with the help of assignments, fieldtrips and practical classes to explore the discipline. In my final year, I also studied the area of children’s geographies which was excellent in making me aware of children’s places and the different environments of children. Psychology bettered my understanding and thoughts of children and their development with the help of my developmental and social modules. My arts degree challenged me in many ways and pushed me into using my imagination in a way that I had not done so before. The independence of my degree allowed me to appreciate the autonomy of learning and to study and learn from outside of the box.
I am constantly organising workshops and I am always implementing new routines and dance programmes for school children. This position allows me to exercise my leadership and teaching skills and I believe I thrive in such a position. For the past three summers I have been involved in the local drama group as a dance teacher and stage guidance with children between the ages of 6-19. Also, since 2010 I organised a dance workshop in my secondary school with afterschool classes and was the main choreographer in the school musical for two years. I undertook various projects with the youth club members. This included becoming a volunteer for the summer months with a pre-school where I acted as an assistant to the teachers. I felt this to be a challenging but extremely rewarding experience.
I’ve been involved with the local community in special needs pre -schools with art and music activities. I am also a member of Scouting Ireland and worked as a Beaver Leader for one year where we practiced basic skills, enjoyed games, arts and crafts, nature adventures and days out throughout the year which built on the children’s development.
As part of my experience in the classroom, I spent two months in St. Marys primary school, Pettigo, Donegal and also another three weeks in Christ the King RC, Newton Heath, Manchester.I am a pro-active person and keep busy. I was a member of the dance and kayaking society when I was an undergraduate. I have been dancing since the age of 6 in many different areas from ballet, Jazz and contemporary. I would love to incorporate the art of dance into my teaching practise. In every aspect of my life I’ve always falling into a teaching and caring role. I enjoy the leadership aspect and find working with young people particularly fulfilling.
During years in secondary school, I undertook two years of ICT and developed many skills in the process which I think is extremely important for everyday life in our society.
I believe that knowing your students and responding to their diverse needs is at the heart of effective teaching. Equality and mutual respect among teachers and students are important elements for a successful teaching environment. I consider myself a well rounded person with a vast amount of experience in different areas. I am passionate and motivated and I would like to pass my passion for life onto my students. I have a varied amount of experience and determination which I believe would contribute positively to my teaching degree.
