Sustainability - Part 05: Closing the loop on Sustainability... Your thoughts?
Question 1: 10 points 1. Please type 1 paragraph outlining what you think was the most interesting item/s discussed in the video.
From watching the video titled "Seeing a Sustainable Future," by Alex Steffen I think that the most interesting item that he discusses was the fact that the world is continually being urbanized. So, basically with the fact of saving the world of global warming by changing the fuels we use today into clean sources of energy it is overwhelming to our species. With the continuous growth of factories, cities, and buildings that take up the space of land it is literally close to impossible for us to create the required amount of clean sources of energy. These words at the first few minutes of the video were very interesting and made me rethink our rapid urbanization. Question 2: 10 points 2. Please type 1 paragraph on what sustainability mean to you? Have you changed your behavior with an added awareness of what it means to be/live sustainably?
To me sustainability is using general and natural resources that can better help the environment and requires less materials to create or rather make happen. Through this course and my whole semester at KCC I have learned more about sustainability and it has impacted some part my behavior. I am more susceptible to sustainable products and ways of living. I would want people to live more sustainably and so I would try to lead by example. Living this way can take a long time, but the right influence I can become more friendly to the environment, create sustainable alternatives, and use more of my natural resources. I have used local farms that are close to where I live and my friend actually owns it and so the process of exchange is used rather than payment. It impacts both of our behavior's even more as we know what it means to live sustainably.
Question 3: 10 points 3. Please type 1 paragraph outlining what you think about the changes that have taken place in Hawaii, the place we all call home for now. Are you on a sustainable path? Are we on a sustainable path? How do we all make a difference?
From watching the speaker known as Sam 'Ohu Gon lll I have really thought more about the changes and transformation Hawaii has gone through and is still going through. It is rather shocking to see the difference because of all the 27 Holdridge Life zones and the Native Ecosystems that helped our people survive become such an advanced and less self sufficient place to live. Going from 100% to less than 15% really impacts my view on the society and my home. I am more or likely on a sustainable path compared to everyone " as a whole. I use more natural resources than buying them from the store. Looking for better quality in the food I buy such as free-ranged, local farms, and eco-friendly packaging. The fact that "we" aren't on a sustainable path is just saying that the way the world is it may lead in that direction. We all make a difference by impacting others, teaching, and respecting the land that we live on.
Question 4: 25 points 4. What is your philosophy for a happy life? Please list at least 5 things that you feel make for a happy life for you, currently or in the future. (Finishing CULN 130 does not count, Sorry).
My philosophy for a happy life is, "Laughter is the best cure for negative emotions and feelings." Whether I'm mad at someone or just feeling under the weather, I have my friends to keep a smile on my face and warmth in my heart. The five things that make for happy life for me currently and/or in the future is; talking to and seeing my friends everyday, having a very supportive family, taking culinary school to better my future, working at a restaurant teaching me things I don't know, mistakes are what make me who I am and grow to not do the same things twice. These five things that I feel make for a happy life will hopefully inspire someone like Sam Berns did for me.
